Got a system with only one PCI slot & no AGP slot that needs a card for legacy games. Voodoo4 & 5 are out of the question, as well as nVidia offerings. So basically, I need to know FOR SURE what is faster. A Voodoo3 3000 PCI, or a Voodoo2 SLI (The Quantum Obsidian X-24 is a dual Voodoo2 SLI setup in one PCI card). I own a V3 3K AGP card (It's funky though, veritcal lines all through windows) and from what I remember 3dfx even said it was just like a Voodoo2 SLI w/ a 2D card. I ask because I'm considering BUYING the X-24.

Is there another video card takin a PCI slot for 2D, thats the only downside with going SLI you still need a 2D card as well? But anyway, I seem to recall that the 3000 is a voodoo2 sli with 2D capabilities, I don't think you'd go wrong with either setup.

VooDoo3 3000 would be faster. The VooDoo3 2000 is even better than the SLI VooDoo2's.

The V3 is a different chip besides just the addition of a 2D processor. The PC has integrated video, and only has one expansion slot. The Micro ATX board length = 3 case slots. One is used by the integrated 10/100 Ethernet & the other by the integrated v.90 modem (Both are slot covers with cables to the board), this leaves the case with room for one more card and so the motherboard only has 1 PCI slot (Shared with an ISA slot). Very limiting for a board with both a Slot1 & Socket 370 connector!

I believe the V3 should be somewhat faster in most applications, as well as MUCH cheaper, due to the rarity of the X-24.
But I have to ask, why no NVidia? Or what about a PCI radeon?

The Voodoo3 3000 would be slighty faster. The Voodoo2 SLI generally ranges from about 10% slower then to 5% faster then the Voodoo3 2000 despite the Voodoo2 having superior theoretical capabilities over the V3 2000.

I'd go with the Voodoo3 becuase it has a 2D processor. I don't think you'd notice a performance difference between a V3 or a V2 SLI. I seem to remember the V3 being a bit faster though.

Hmm, well a friend of mine has a V3 3K PCI that he using to hold him out for an nForce board that I'm sure he won't need later :)

BTW, the Obsidian is $30 shipped (I got many offers). Should I still go for it?

nVidia is a no-no for Glide based games (UltraHLE WILL be on this system. Screw Glide Wrappers on a 500Mhz PC!) and I've seen Unreal Tournament on my old Voodoo3 blow away my own GeForce3 in visual quality (Despite the high-rez textures & 32-bit color, GL has too many glitches & Direct3D is slow & jerky on nVidia).
Besides, I have nVidia cards in all my other PCs!
Also, it's tough to find a card that can run Final Fantasy 7 in Direct3D mode since the V3 3K...
