What has the same perforance level as a voodoo3 3000 nowadays? Is it good enough to run modern/old games? I'm building a computer for little brother. Wondering if I should use this card or buy a new one (the money has to come out of my pocket :Disgust;).

tnt2 would compare to it, my mom runs a voodoo3. they have great 2D, almost as good as Matrox. They are good for games like UT and other GLIDE games. Half Life based games run good if you use Wicked GL. 3DHQ makes voodoo3 drivers, that i hear are pretty good, they come in all flavors from 98 to xp

I have one in my Duron 800Mhz machine. It's fine for old games, but anything new it either crawls or won't work altogether. I play Baldur's Gate, C&C, and 4x4 Offroad on it with no probs. But you can get this card from mwave.com for $35 which would blow away a V3.

Heck, my Voodoo 2 ran CS 1.3 decently, only it ran out of texture memory (just 8MB's on the 12MB card :) ) on some larger levels.

16MB should be fine, but you'll never know until you play the map. :) And switching to 16-bit will essentially "double" your memory.

I used to run a Voodoo3 2000 (16MB) in my son's old system (Duron 600), and it ran acceptably for games up to about 18 months ago or so (and I mean acceptable - its been awhile since it ran them well :). Jedi Knight II was what convinced me to upgrade .... went to a GF2 Ti 64MB, and it was night and day in that game. He's now got an ATI 8500LE, and it's considerably faster than the old GF2 (currently on an XP2000+).

So, basically, the lowest thing you could pick up today (e.g. GF4MX, GF2 Ti, etc.) would give you a significant boost over the Voodoo.

If your looking for a very cheap, good, video card that will blow away the Voodoo3 era and everything else below $40, get the GeForce2 GTS 32MB. That bad boy will run CS no prob's, image quailty will be something left to be desired though. But what can you expect at that price range.

BTW -- The GeForce2 GTS 32MB currently retail's for about $32 USD. Creative still makes them I think, the Annihilator 2.

my voodoo5 ran redalert 2 fine, i would guess a voodoo3 would run it also. as long as you have a decent cpu. and cs runs fine on my moms voodoo3 rig with a pentium 233mmx

Boy that brings back memmories, I had V3 3500 at the time. It was 3DFXs All In Wonder solution....

I just upgraded to a Radeon 9700 Pro from a Voodoo3 3000 last December. I'm not sure about C&C, but it played Q3A well enough. RtCW was also borderline acceptable, but UT2K3/Unreal II was a no go though. As a testament to its great 2D quality, I can't tell much noticable difference between the V3's image quality and the R9700 Pros on my 21" Nokia 445xpro(1600x1200@85Hz) with BNC cables.

Voodoo 3 will run older games like Half Life or Quake3, but don't expect it to run them very smoothly, of course, since it's so old. With Wicked GL, I managed to run Quake3 on my old 400mhz PII at an acceptable speed.
