Voodoo3 2000 Problem?

Hello.

I think I have a problem with my Voodoo3 card.
During daytime, it doesn't have any problem.
But as soon as the sun sets, my monitor starts shaking.
It's like a flicker in upto 1280 x 1024 resolution. But in 1600 x 1200, it is horrible.
At first time, I thought there was a problem in my monitor that I just bought, so I returned it.
And then I connected my old 15 inch monitor. But it has the same problem.
Two weeks ago I upgraded Voodoo3 driver from their homepoge(Version 1.05).
Do you think the recent driver causes the problem?

Sounds to me like either your refresh is too low (check your refresh rate in the advanced display properties - the minimum you should use is 75 hz) or (this would explain why it acts up at night) you have something located near the monitor (like a flourescent desklamp) that contains a power transformer that's interfering with the flyback transformer on your monitor.

Pull everything away from the monitor that's plugged into the wall: speakers, clocks, radios, desk lamps, etc.

My monitor's refresh rates was 85Hz(in 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1600x1024) when it produced a weak flicker. And in 1600x1200@75Hz, it was shaking.
Also I tried to pull everything away except my desktop and monitor. But it still had its problem.

But finally, I found what causes the shaking. (You will not believe this!)
When my monitor faces toward the west, it makes shaking.
But when it faces other directions, there is no problem.

Can anyone explain this?


 
It is a well-known fact that as the sun goes down the moon's magnetic pull on the earth increases which affects monitors. It is another known fact (less well-known) that the magnetic flux density is the strongest in the westward direction. It is apparant to me that you are suffering from the moons magnetic field.
 
I have seen something similar, but it was caused by strong overhead lighting (track lighting). When the monitor was on the desk it had discoloration (similar to if you put unshielded speakers next to the screen). However, when I put the monitor on the floor it was fine.

Most likely, when you are turning your monitor "west" you are moving it closer to the source of your interference. It could be a strong power source in the wall or a microwave oven in the next room, fluro lights do it, unshielded speakers do it, there are all kinds of choices.

Best way to verify is to take your machine somewhere out of that room and set it up. If the shaking stops you know your problem is back in your room.

Well, you can find out if the new driver is the problem by installing an older version (like the on shipped with the card). If that doesn't help, try using a different card, an old one or a friend's (not another V3 2000 though ...).
Ah and about the driver, I think a new V3 driver was released yesterday ... you should try that before doing anything else. But I doubt it is a driver issue ... sounds a bit more like hardware.
 
I agree with CinderElmo. You could also try just moving it around a bit on the desk and see what this does for you if you have a little slack in the cable. You might not have to move everything that way. Just my 2 cents.
 
yeah, I've got a v3 2k as well, and had probs with it picked up interfrence from the power in the house and the spks, also the place where the power attached to the monitor didnt hold it in well, and some times a shift of a 1/4 inch would nock it loose. so check where your cable runs, if the vid cable is intwined too much with a power cable, you'll have probs

Well why don't you find out? Uninstall them and re-install your old ones. I suspect it is the drivers because you said you tried your old monitor and it still had problems.
 
Shaking occured only 1600x1200@75Hz with the monitor that I returned. In other resolutions, it looked like a flicker. And the shaking was vertical(I think).

I uninstalled the new driver(v.1.06) and installed the old one, but it still has the problem. So I am likely to agree with CinderElmo.
But in the west wall of my room, there is nothing but the closet. I took my computer and monitor to other two rooms, and the result was same.
But in the livingroom, there was mo problem at all! How weird!😕
 
I had a problem that sounded an awful lot like this one, come to find out my tower was too close to my monitor. I moved the tower and wammer jammer the jumping display settled right down.
