The moment I stepped into Battlezone I was enamored. The graphics were amazing and the gameplay was increadible. This increased ten-fold when I purchased my dual 12mb Voodoo2s and installed a large texture patch. This was around 3 years ago. I still have the V2s, and have moved on to Tribes and Counter Strike but still frequent Battlezone. I know that major technological leaps have been made in the realm of video cards, but I'm mainly seeing a lot of theoretical improvements: expensive cards which do things that games do not yet support.

What good would a *new* video card *really* bring to my gaming? Would a new card increase the visual luster of Battlezone, Counter Strike, or Tribes; or, would it mearly produce framerates in the high thousands? Are there points I'm missing in this decision?

Thanks for your time.

It depends what games You play. Games You mention are more than 1 year old by now, if not 2...
And the resolution and color depth is important too. At 800x600 at 16 bit color You are fine for most of even todays games with your dual V2. But if it comes to new features, much nicer visuals, higher color depths, higher resolutions, higher framerates (smoother gameplay=much more enjoyable).
The difference is the same like black and white TV - You basically can watch that TV without problems, you just never see how green the grass is...

There is nothing that can be added to improve upon your V2 sli setup. Everyone knows you need a Voodoo card to get them 3dfx. There are newer cards, but the V2 architecture has never been improved upon. Don't waste your money- your V2s are as good as it gets.

"expensive cards which do things that games do not yet support."
This is so true. There are no games with textures larger than 256X256, none with 32 bit color, no Dot3, no EBM, no T/L, no pixel shading, no cubic environment mapping, no fog, no FSAA, nothing.
It's as if the game programmers KNEW the V2 was "as good as it gets" and stopped there.

BTW- how are Wilma, Pebbles, and Dino doing, uziefect? Are you still working for Mr. Slate down at the quarry? I'll see you at the Waterbuffalo meeting tonite!
