Voodoo still a hot card

I've been building new systems all week, and recent problems with a NewEgg refurb Sapphire 8500LE, made me grab a old voodoo3 3000 to check that the system wasn't being funky instead of the Sapphire.

Wow, all I can say is the video output of the old Voodoo3 sure is NICE. Sharp and crisp, but I haven't played anything 3d yet except a little Diablo II. Tomorrow I may see how it does on some other harder stuff.

Their driver support is top notch too, I hear little Timmy Turner has almost got the XP kinks worked out! If he didn't have to study for his algebra test, they would be done already!

Do I detect sarcasm? Naaah!

There is a plethora of bargain bin cards from over the years that kick the snot out of any Voodoo.

voodoo 3 3000 works fantastic on diablo 2,
those cards will outperform Nvidia cards on D2 anytime...

trust me. I had a v3 2K and I was alot more satisfied playin D2 compared to the gf2 GTS( which is a much beter card at that time).

Any game that supports Glide will look MUCH better on a Voodoo. A friend of mine has a PII 400 with a Voodoo Banshee that played D2 better than my system (looks and smoothness).

Not Really. UT looks best in OpenGL. From there, its --->MeTal--->D3D--->Glide--->Software.

IIRC, Unreal Engine 226 was Glide only until patched, and thus built around glide.

UT I think was D3D focused, being a later engine version.

The New tech is definitely DirectX centered....D3D all the way....OGL doesn't even support all the effects.

how does openGL not support all effects. OpenGL has extensions to supports everything, they might not support things from DirectX but then again its OpenGL, its different. As far as the capabilities of the card, OpenGL can utilize all of them.

And please stop with the sarcasm. It stupid.

I got my Voodoo 5 5500 PCI 64MB. This baby rocks and gives me great frame rates with crisp picture quality. I just wish it had more memory so that I could use high texture quality on MOH:AA, besides that everything is on high at 1024x768. Min fps is 30 and max fps 65. Memory is my only bottleneck keeping me from enjoying the best picture quality available.

Unreal actually started out as a software renderer.
UT kicks in OpenGL with high res S3TC textures. Better looking and faster as well. Glide looks like @ss in comparison.
Take a look here
