Voodoo 5000 drivers

When I got my card last spring , I DLed the last official drivers offerd by 3DFX (1.04) but there was a more updated version offered by X3DFX (1.08) that came without 3DFX tools etc. I DLed them and when I installed them , I would get diagonal lines acrosss my monitor . I did a format C: after and reverted to my 1.04s and never looked back. I DLed them (the 1.08s and just clicked on the executable to install them thinking they would overwrite the other drivers. Was this correct? I'm wondering wether I did something wrong in their installation. If I update them again and I get the same results, can I just re-apply the 1.04s over them by again just clicking the executable.
I got a new fighter flight sim game (IL2 Sturmovik) and the FPSs are terrible, like watching a slide show whenever I fly over cities or armour divisions. I tried the Wicked OpenGL drivers which kick in only for that game but they're still not up to par with what I should be getting. I rememeber reading also that the 1.08s should be installed for the wickeds to work properly. Any oppinions would be appreciated.
