Voodoo 5 strange AGP connector. What's the story on that?

My Voodoo5 AGP connector looks like this:

l___l l_______l

This doesn't fit into an AGP 8x slots. I've also seen them look this:

l___l l___l l___l

This fits into an AGP 8x slots.

DONT PUT A VOODOO5 INTO A 8X AGP MOBO AND TURN IT ON IF YOU WANT YOUR MOTHERBOARD TO LIVE

They're keyed differently so you can't put an incompatible card in the slot and fvck things up. It's not "strange" it's just the old agp slot design (I think for agp 1.0).

Haven't heard of anyone actually fryin anything cause of the AGP slot. A system just won't power on if there's a voltage conflict with the vid card.

A Voodoo 5 will not work in an AGP x4 slot or higher. The voltage is wrong and the pins are not compatible.

AGP cards and slots are keyed to prevent electrically incompatible stuff from being plugged together.

The Voodoo series, all being PCI chips on AGP cards, can only do PCI-style 3.3V signalling, 1.5V signalling as required for 4x/8x-only slots is not supported. Hence the missing 2nd key notch in its connector blade.

As you already noticed, 4x/8x-only boards have a key tab in exactly that position where the Voodoo card does NOT have a notch. This is to prevent you from inserting the incompatible card.

Boards that do not have the (expensive) voltage protection stuff on WILL fry if you insert an incompatible card - but for that to happen, the card would have to be incompatible AND wrongly keyed. There are some TNT2 cards that are falsely keyed 3.3V and 1.5V capable; the Voodoo range luckily is correctly keyed 3.3V-only.

Move on. Leave history behind.

Again, until you apply power. Then it won't be fine.

I also converted an ISA video card to AGP with this trick. It's all a scam. If you can make it fit, it'll be fine.

...Sorry if people thought I was being serious. I assumed that the outrageous claim, combined with the ':)' would imply sarcasm.
