Voodoo 5 AGP vs PCI

I would like to buy a Voodoo 5. My plan is to get a PCI version right now and later on add something like a Geforce 2 Ultra. I want Voodoo for picture quality and Geforce for speed.

What is a speed difference between PCI and AGP versions? On PII-400 and on AMD Thunderbird 1.2Ghz machines.

Also where is a good place to buy Voodoo 5 PCI in Canada?

You will see very little speed difference between agp and pci version on the same system since the V5 does not take advantage of the agp fast writes etc

I can not on the speed difference you will see between on the different systems

Taking "advantage" of fast writes or AGP would slow any video card down for gaming. If a game used agp, it probably wouldn't be playable anyway.

The picture quality between the two is arguable. The V5 has just slightly better FSAA but has problems with 32bit color, while the GF2U should render textures better, uses tri linear filtering in GL, and more features that make it arguably better at least in 3d.

If you search around you'll find a review of this. There was a difference, and it was somewhat significant, but maybe it would be OK for you. I can't remember the numbers right now.

Another option might be the Geforce2 MX PCI. They are cheaper and would hold you over until you want a better card. This card would have better support and drivers for the future also.

The only performance difference is a few percent at the highest resolutions (which are unplayable anyway). Since you mentioned you want to get a GF2 Ultra later, get the PCI version of the Voodoo and you can use both boards together.

Madthumbs:

Taking "advantage" of fast writes or AGP would slow any video card down for gaming.

What are you talking about? AGP provides a noticeable performance boost for T&L equipped boards. Even the difference between APG x2 and AGP x1 is significant.

but has problems with 32bit color,

Which problems might those be?

Welcome to the forums JohnnyD- this is JohnnyD's first post.
wow, doncha think two cards like that is kinda OTT? are they both going in the same box? Anandtech does a very full review of the PCI and AGP models. pci is hardly handicapping the V5 at all. openGL only works on the primary video card remember.

Thank you, it's good to be here.
Even though this is my first post I have been reading this
forum for quite a while. I have read all of the numerous
discussions about picture quality of different graphics
cards and it is my understanding that Voodoo and Radeon
are close together and Geforce is after them. This is
certainly is not written in stone for example I have a
friend who owns a Geforce 2 and he is very happy with
his card. I mostly play flight and car simulators and
for me picture quality is very important. On most simulator
forums people state that FSAA makes a lot of difference
for picture quality therefore I decided that it would be
best for me to get this kind of setup. Also I am not going
to buy second card right away, when the time will be right.
It could be a Radeon 2 or Geforce 3 🙂 My current system
is PII 400 and I am planing on upgrading it to AMD 1.2Ghz
later on.
