I just bought a VOODOO 5 5500 AGP, but I can't get it to work propertly.
When I enable both VSA-100 chips, it stops when i start any game using 3D. When I disable one of the VSA-100 chips (using singel chip) , it works for a while, then stops.

Maybe it has something to do with the systems power management. I've tried using both a 200W and a 250W, but it still don't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My PC:

Abit BH6
2x 128 MB PC-133 RAM
PIII-800 FCPGA 133mhz
IBM 75GXP 30.0GB Ultra ATA/100 7200rpm
Voodoo 5 5500 AGP

maybe this is a very stupid question, but do you have the 5V rail connected to the card? everyone forgets from time to time.... then again, i could be making a very big ass of myself :)

hrm...
ok, does it crash at all outside 3D? I had this problem a while back with a very troublesome TNT2-M64 that would crash at even the hint of 3D, it turned out to be a bad card. I also had this problem recently, but this was due to user error, i didnt have the VIA 4-in-1's installed, you have no idea just how humiliated i was when i found out :) I'm thinking your motherboard is a BX, so this doesnt apply to you :p

Possible causes:
Bad AGP slot (possible, although your dual chip problem makes me tend to lean away from this) - have you tried another AGP card?

Lack of power (dual chip problem is supportive of this) - possibly a bad connector, although multiple power supplies were used with same results, have you got access to a 300W? If so, this would eliminate the possibility of a PSU without enough power

Bad drivers - download a few more sets and try them ALL.

Bad AGP driver - although i had EXACTLY the same problems regarding an AGP driver, I have no idea how the BX's AGP driver regime works, would anyone care to shed any light?

Conflicting IRQ - check under System, device manager, computer, properties, any other conflicts should be evident

Overheating - Although this seems unlikely (it would crash in 2D aswell, and usually after a certain time period, not necessarily starting up just 3D), make sure both fans are working

it almost certainly seems like a bad card, due to your symptoms, try all of the above, and if still no avail, return that board fast! in a few days, if these best buy stock rumours are true, then you won't be able to get a replacement/refund after a while

hope this helps :)

Thanx for the tips.

The card works like a dream in 2D, but so does my Ati 4 MB AGP. :(

I've tried severeal AGP cards, and all of them worked, but not this Voodoo 5.

* I've tried three different driver versions, all crashed.
* There's no IRQ conflict.

I ordered a 300W power management which arrives tomorrow, and I'll get back to you then.

once again... Thanx alot for the tips.

okies :)

this basically narrows it down to the PSU, the AGP driver or the card itself. I'm fairly skeptical the PSU will work. and as for the AGP driver, i'm really fumbling in the dark here, as i have no idea how intel manages their AGP driver. if it's not either of the above, it's almost certainly a dead card.... is it brand new, or have you had it for a while now?

New conclusions - Limited to 3D:

driver problems (AGP) - No idea how to fix/check this, possibly a re-install of windows

DirectX (code only being provoked whilst operating in 3D is bodgey) - Try a few new DX versions, if you're running DX8, switch back to 7

Power - This still exists because of your dual chip symptoms. To be quite honest, i dont see how power could be the problem, as the V5 draws all of it's power from the PSU's 5V rail.

Bad card - I'm now leaning towards this heavily if a re-install of windows doesnt work

The most controvertial issue about this card is the fact that it tends to crash less when put into a 1 chip solution. Now it *could* be your PSU, although I'm doubtful, i guess we'll find out tomorrow. This could either be caused by serious power consumption, a faulty SLI implementation, or bad vid card drivers. As for it only malfunctioning in 3D, i recieved VERY similar results when i didnt have the proper AGP driver installed, but again, i've no idea how to fix this for an intel chipset. Try re-installing windows (sorry to resort to such measures :( ) and see if that sheds any light on the situation. And also try re-installing DX

Anyways, I'm glad to give you a hand, even though it isnt doing all that much :( Off to bed I go, and may my new Plextor burner be here tomorrow :|

Well, I got my 300 W, but it still don't work.
I've tried everything, but still no change. I also tried it on another mother board.

It works neither in win 95, win 98, or win 2K.

Yesterday, I contacted the dealer and they told me I'll get a new card after christmas.

Very well, thanx for the help, and I wish u a mery christmas, and a happy new year.

:) now if only all troubled peeps were like you hefner.... :)

i'd definately say it was a bodgey board if it didnt work in another machine, anyways, merry christmas to you too, and of course, happy new year :)

Return it if you can! You better hurry all 3dfx users have been abandoned. But remember they did it for us! Yeah right!

I just got a voodoo 5500 myself in a msi proa2 motherboard. For the most part the card is doing a great job with games as far as compatability goes. I have had a few games with bad slodwon on some recent games which is just screwed up, but I haven't had any crashes! Ive been running it through the ringer with a bunch of games for the past 2 days, messing with aa options, etc. and haven't had one annoying lock or anything to make me think the card or drivers were screwy.

Im liking this card over the radeon and geforce ddr simply because of the rendering issues I was having with both other cards(stairstepping). I never could solve those problems and I may be losing speed with this setup but I like being able to play all my games atleast pretty good.

I have direct x 8 installed.

I can see this card starts to choke with aa on at higher resolutions which sucks. 4x is a little noticeable when I play certain games and would have been neat, but I'll ditch the feature to just be able to play most the games. Plus some of the glide games like grand prixe legends, tribes, deus ex, unreal, etc. are playing better on this card.

I think Im gonna stay with it until something new from nvidia comes out.

anyways I cant say I have had any issues at all like your having even running through the aa settings after installing the drivers for the first time.
