Voodoo 5 5500 AGP vs ATI Radeon 64 MB vs Geforce 2 GTS. Help me pick one

I have 3 choices: an ATI Radeon 64 MB, a Geforce 2 GTS or a Voodoo 5 5500.

I believe the first one has more fps than the voodoo 5 5500, but does this mean that it has better graphics?

should I go for the Voodoo 5 5500?
 
Um, for a Golden Member, you'd think you'd have learned how to use the Search function. And also how to ask questions: what's your setup? What games do you play? What's your budget? HAve you priced the cards? Do you watch DVDs on your PC? What OS do you use? What res will you be running your desktop?

Celeron 400 Mhz, 440 BX motherboard, 224 MB of RAM. I am buying a P3 700 though.

What games do you play?
Q3A, Half Life.

What's your budget?
no more than $400

Do you watch DVDs on your PC?
yes

What OS do you use?
win98se and might move to windows 2000 once in a while.

What res will you be running your desktop?
well, with my current video card, a nVDIA RIVA 128, I always play at 800 by 600. I don't know if I should stick to a low resolution if I have a good video card though.

GTS or Radeon

the more Win2k you are gaming with, the less you should look into Radeon due to the bad drivers it still have
 
With the P3 700, I'd say either the Raedon or the Geforce 2 GTS. The Raedon is apparently very high quality image-wise, about on par with the GeForce 2 on speed issues, and has some nice DVD tweaks.

If you wouldn't mind, a $100-ish GeForce 2 MX would do you nicely until you can buy something bigger. In a few months there will be more cards to choose from.
 
I was also wondering how well these video cards would perform with a Celeron 400.

I am upgrading to a Pentium 3 700, but that's going to be in a couple of months.
 
they should all be pretty slow with the celeron 400, but probably still playable. Since you have a bx board the p3-700 would just be a drop in replacement, you can get one in the forsale/trade forum for $145 from compuwhiz i think , if its one that doesnt o/c to 933 and you dont seem to be OCing currently so thats a good deal. The v5 would be able to do 4x fsaa on a cel 400 better than the other 2. The dvd on the v5 isnt hardware compensated at all so DVDs might not be very good on a celeron 400 (it should be good enough in software in theory though you probably wont be able to multitask , then again thats kinda pointless) , but definitely on the 700 it would be good. The radeons and gf2 is hardware compensated, but the radeons is better its supposed to be just as good as a realmagic. Radeon has better 2d quality, the v5 is about as good as the radeon, and the gf2 can suck my nuts in 2d quality (well from the 2 i've had). The radeon is more expensive than the other 2. Currently based on prices for new Items in the forsale / trade forum, you can get a v5 5500 OEM from quino at $175, a gf2 64mb OEM is $205 or so from Untamo, and the ati radeon 64mb retail box is $230 from Hawk. Thats all for new stuff.
 
If you had the P3 now, I'd say V5. However, being that you don't and you want DVD, I'd say go with a GTS. 64 MB most likely.
 
I'm going to say the V5 because #1 you play half-life and it looks much better with the 3dfx mini driver. But if you don't game that much then go for the GTS. If you really care about 2d/DVD go for the ATI.
 
Hmmmmm...get a faster processor than 700Mhz. Then go for a GTS. 😉

It's sweet once you have a fast processor.

I have to agree that FSAA on the Voodoo5 is tempting but with a fast processor and a GTS, playing games at higher resolution would eliminate the use of FSAA.
 
Holy crap...how do you play at 800x600 with your RIVA128.

My TNT is a slug at that res.

If you are gonna run win2k, my choice would be the GTS. I'm not too sure how the V5 is doing in win2k with the highly talked about new drivers, but the GTS's win2k drivers are solid.
 
for pure value- you can find a GTS card for around $160, OEM for sure, but its still a darn good price. I feel the 3 cards are roughly comparable plus or minus a few things, and you should buy on account of value. Spending $160 now means you can buy another toy in 6 months.
 
hmm..i would personally go with a radeon, unless u are using win2k, previously stated. then i would go with the v5. dont worry about pure speed. the gts is faster, not by much, but the quality makes up for it. i would personally get a v5 5500, run it at 10x7 4x fsaa (v5 5500) and look at how nice the images are!!!!

For Win2k, DVD with the 700Mhz get the V5 5500. Your 400 will cut it for a couple of months and when you get the 700 you will love it. The drivers out now are great!
 
depends also on when you want to spend it. a geforce mx will get you most of the speed of a gts, and can be found for $100 or so oem. if you can find a gts for under $200, i'd take that. the speed is there, the nt5 support is there. it does have issues with texture compression and also the 2d quality can be poor depending on the manufacturer. the v5 is a good performer, not too sure about the nt5 support, ask someone who has one, and it seems like the driver updates are getting more performance out of it than nvidia does. plus it makes half life a dream, what with very good FSAA that the geforce and radeon just can't match. the radeon is sorta a wildcard. the retail DDR versions are very good with win 98, have great dvd support, plenty of speed. i'd also consider them slightly more future proof than a geforce, since it has triple texturing and a more programmable t&l than the geforce. but the nt5 drivers suck big time. and the oem/lower priced versions don't have near the speed.

okay, heres my recommendation: the geforce mx. it is just as fast as a gts with a celeron 400, firingsquad did a comparison of cards with "low end" processors a while back, it performed well. its cheap, leaves you with some money left over, which is always a good thing. the drivers for nt5 are solid. i did have issues with the 3 version drivers under win 2k (bluescreens attributed to nv4disp.dll... my voodoo 3 never had probs) but since then they've cleared up.
 
I meant your Windows desktop, as the Radeon or V5 will give you much better image clarity than the GTS at high 2D resolutions, like 1156x864 and above.

If I had the money, I'd spend it on a V5, b/c I think it's a great package (FSAA, legacy compatiblity, and apparently the latest drivers kick the performance up a notch). However, it doesn't have hardware DVD, and it costs a bit, and it might have trouble fitting in your case. So the Radeon 32MB DDR is very tempting, faster than the GF:MX at about the same price ($160 @ Buy.com - $30 coupon). But their drivers make me wary; still, you already have Win98, stick to that for gaming and your golden.

I myself have a Cel266@400, and my first move will be a CPU upgrade, to a P3-700 or so. Then I'll think about the graphic card.

 
Why worry with hardware DVD. My DVD playback on a CUSL2 P III700@933 and the V5 [We are in Love!😉] DVD playback is awesome!

acutally, im not prejudiced by the v5 5500, tho i do say go for it. i myslef have a gts, ive used a radeon, the 2d on the radeon is awesome, so is the 3d quality, improved over the gts..


in order heres what i would go for

1) v5 5500
2) Ati Radeon AIW 64mb
3) Geforce 2 GTS 64,

if ur tite on cash go with a 32 megger for 2 and 3...also jsut ask quino on the for sale/trade forums..he always has some v5 5500..

hope u buy it..im looking into it myself..
