voodoo 3500 or voodoo 4500???? **Edit**

whats better??

Edit: Decided to abandon the voodoo idea due to suport reasons. I purchased a Radeon VE 32mb with tv out from Newegg.

Thanks Guys

There old, and the company that makes them is dead so there are no new driver updates or support lines. Not to mention there slow compared to more modern cards.

The V3 3500 actually has a higher clock speed, but the V4500 has 32bit color support, large texture (2kx2k) support, has two single texture pixel pipelines (so for old games it's faster and more flexible, because most old games only use one texture).

But, unless either is dirt cheap, I'd go with something else first.

Because the company that makes them, 3DFX, is out of business, which equals no drivers, no support, no forthcoming games. Plus, the 3500 just plain sucks and has crappy drivers that will never be updated. The 4500? I didn't even realize they got those to the shelves before they folded. Get a GF2 MX if price is an issue. If not, get a GF2 Ultra or GF3.

i just picked up an extra 3000 for an old p2 im ressurecting.

if you are limited to a slow proc and pci slots, voodoo are about as nice as you are going to get. (maybe a readeon, but pricy-er.)

I just followed his link and realized he is running a K6-2. Ouch! 🙁🙁🙁 I feel for ya. Time for a new processor.

i would but because of my system's limitations (i.e. AMD k6-2+ 500 and FIC 503+ blah blah blah) how could I possibly benifit from putting a GTS or GF3 in my system?

flambus - sorry no offense. But you are right, a GF1 2 or 3 would be a waste in that system. If you are not a hardcore gamer, consider one of the ATI cards (Rage or Radeon based) if video out is a priority. Hell even a TNT2 Ultra with v/o would be a major improvement over that M64.

larry,

no offense taken. I just want to get an appropriate vid card for my system. a radeon? are you suggesting this because 3dfx went belly up?

people really seem to like their voodoos. i am leaning toward one of those. will have to look at the radeons too. which radeon ? there is the VA the LE,,,, so confused.

thanks,
Eric

Eric - I don't have a Radeon, but do know that people are very happy with these cards. They may not beat nvidia in terms of gaming, but the all around purpose and features have a great following. 2D is supposed to be superb, DVD playback is the best and video out is supposed to be the best as well. Definietely stay with one of the value editions of the Radeon. Look for the highest clock speed with the most memory. You may also want to consider the all-in-one if you are interested in TV and video capture. Surf around, there is info everywhere.

LJ

EDIT - yes, 3DFX=Gone, don't waste your money on those cards.

Man, I know I sound like a lot of people on here, but Nvidia all the way! I had voodoo3 3000 on a system like yours, and well it was sad. I'd get like 15(average) FPS in Counter-strike..however my friend with a a P3 500 and a TNT got like 30 as an average. If you are going for a Voodoo, go for the Voodoo5. I think your computer will push it to it's limits. But I have to agree, I think it's time for a system upgrade if you play games. The new KT133E are good/cheap boards and hell, a I gig processor is now $110 shipped at www.pricewatch.com

sounds like you had some cpu limitations bc you will get more than 15 fps in cs w/ a voodoo3 and a decent system.

Yeah, my Voodoo3 was getting maxing out at 70+ fps with avg about 40-50 fps in heavy firefights with my pIII 800.

The V4-4500 will be about the same performance as the V3-3500TV. There's two major differences:
V3-3500TV: has all sorts of neato TV tuner/VIVO stuff
V4-4500: has 2x FSAA

The FSAA is a beautiful thing, and because your CPU is the limiting factor, you can turn it on for the extra visual quality and not see ANY difference in the FPS. (That was definately the case on my Celeron450A!)

If they're both under $50US, can't scrape up enough to get a Radeon LE (definately good for slow processor and EXCELLENT bang-for-the-buck) then I'd vote for the 4500.

I think the V3-3500 is awesome for simplicity, plus the dongle that sits on your desktop makes video hookup a snap. 😉

what is the difference between LE and VE?

I think I read somewhere about memory speed. Besides i didn't want to shell out alot of money for a card and this should quite a step up from my tnt2 m64.

thanks
