i am at a loss

What type of games?

By the fact that I have never in my life heard of that MB, it's probably the MB.

I built a computer with a cheap mb and it worked fine until I played a 3d game. A lot of bad/generic boards can't supply enough power through the AGP port to give any sort of stability to the card. It might lockup, it might crash to the desktop. Turn down the graphics slider on the system->performance tab and try to run whatever game you're using in software mode.

I'm still willing to bet it's the board.

3dfx cards aren't agp power hogs, they have always done fine even on boards that had issues with agp power distribution (i.e. - first generation athlon boards). It can be attributed to a bad/insufficient mobo, or even the cpu. AMD chips up to the athlon really struggled in gaming performance due to poor FPU's, try to o/c your v-card and see if you can make up some slack. Your cards core is 166mhz, you should be able to get at least 185 or so, some people have spoken of over 200 but i don't know.
