Voodoo 3 2D display corruption

I recently got a Voodoo 3 3000 PCI to replace the onboard ATI 3D Rage Pro Turbo in this low-end system. Have just formatted the HD and reinstalled Win98 as it seemed about time and replacing the vid card seemed as good a time as any to do so. Everything is fine except for the 2D display, scrolling in a document spawns a myriad horizontal lines which only disappear when refreshed. The desktop also gets covered in artifacts when windows are closed or menus from the Start menu extended. Drivers are WHQL 1.07.00 for Win9x, MoBo is MS-5182 with latest v1.4 BIOS flash. Only game I've chucked on so far, NFS3, suffers no display problems whatsoever. (The card isn't overclocked but as it is 2nd hand I can't say it hasn't been in the past).
