Voodoo 3 2000 or nvidia gforce2 mx

I have an older pc that was running the voodoo 3 2000 agp card.. Recently I obtained from my father his old computer and scrapped it out. It was a compaq 7110us and had a Nvidia gforce2 mx agp card. Which one would be best for basic viewing (2D?) and minor graphics/video/etc. I guess what I mean is which one will be crisper and or faster. Thanks for the info!

For 2D, the Voodoo 3 cards were very good. The V3 3K was better than the 2K though (faster RAMDAC). The GF2 MX cards 2D is all over the place depending on what brand it is. Some of them are quite bad. You will have to try it and see.

Holy cows!! A Voodoo... when was the last time heard of a Voodoo.

To be very honest sir, All this about 2D stuff is foolish.

Do you think a 6800GT gives better 2D quality than a GF 2 MX???

nvfx, some friendly advice, edit that post or put on your flamesuit, because you are talking out of your a$$ now. Trust me on this one and just do it 🙂

Have you ever owned a card with poor 2D? I have and it stinks. I had a Hercules GF2 Pro that was a very nice 3D card (tops at the time), but the 2D was a blurry mess. It literally gave me a headache. I had to return the card because of it.

Too late! 😛

Guess I never realized the randomness of GF2's 2D quality, I had a GF2 Ti by Aopen and it's 2D & 3D were excellent for it's time, used it up until earlier this year!

heck you can still game on a Geforce 2 mx400. I do. Only this month have things started to not play. quite happy its lasted so dang long!

Yeah, GF2's really were all over the map for 2D quality ... but the Voodoo3 was a great card, with very good 2D. The GF2MX should be faster for gaming .... try it see for yourself how it looks.

Try out the NV card and if the 2d doesnt suffice for your needs use the voodoo. If the 2d is good enough for u, keep it in.

in 2D the voodoo3 probably has near matrox level IQ, i have one, it is awesome 2D, and yes, in 2D it does run 32bit colour, the PC i built for my mom runs it just fine in 2d. If all you do is 2d stuff, then definatly the voodoo3 2000, but if you are wanting to game, then the geforce2MX, if you want 3rd party voodoo3 drivers for XP, PM me. i can point you to the right direction.

Wow! Lots of voodoo magic still going on! I will give it a whirl although getting all the drives straight is a pain. Schandenfroh....I just found the site with the 3rd party drivers. Thanks for the offer.

The Voodoo3 will have great 2D image quality but that's not to say the GF2 MX won't. Personally I've never had issues with nVidia cards WRT 2D but YMMV.

From experience, the Voodoo3 2000 I just recently parted with had excellent 2D IQ. If the latest boards still accepted 2x AGP, I'd still have it.

This topic brings up some memories. I owned a Voodoo 3 3500TV (anyone remember this card?). It was basically Voodoo's attempt at an 'AIW' type card. The 2d quality was absolutely exceptional. Eventually I upgraded to a Geforce 2 GTS 32mb. At the time this was the fastest card available. Although I was happy with the 3d performance, I never really liked the card because of the 2d quality. It always felt like a step backward for me. We don't play games all the time, afterall. Text, photo's, web browsing all took a step backward. It was like viewing my screen through a thin layer of vasaline compared to the Voodoo. To this day I still regret the purchase, and since then 2d has always remained a consideration for me when upgrading a video card.

Incidently I still own and use that Voodoo 3500 in a work computer that never see's 3d action. I also know quite a few people that use Matrox cards in 'business' computers since they have always had the fabled title of 'best 2d quality'. It's not all about 3d....none of us game 100% of the time.
