Voodoo 3 2000 fans out there, heard of this problem?

I have a friend who's gonna sell his computer and want to fix an issue before. He ahs an old Dell system with (I belive) an integrated S3 card and V3 2000. Now he can only get screenres in win 640X480. He said that before, he was able to get 800X600 too. I suspect that there is an issue between the two Graphics card slugging for dominance, but can't figure it out. Whaddayathink?

Sounds like his monitor is not properly defined. What's Device Manager say under "Monitors"?
