Voodoo 2 and older cards

I cant play some of my older games with Win 2000 and my Radeon 7500.

I was thinking of equipping a second system with a couple of Voodoo 2s or something - how well would a pair of 12mb cards run Quake 3?

Any other comments?

Thanks

Can't you play Quake 3 with your Radeon 7500 and Win2k? That's way faster than Voodoo 2 (even SLI).

What older games do you want to play? I have a Pentium 233 set up with a pair of 12MB Voodoo 2's in SLI configuration, I use it to play old Glide games (mainly Carmageddon) and other DOS games that won't play under WinXP (mainly Redneck Rampage).

Sorry I should have been more clear.

Well I cant play MotoRacer or Grand Theft Auto (the original) under Win2k, and there are some others. Admittedly MotoRacer isnt Glide, but its enough for me to warrant putting an older OS on a spare machine...

If the machine was setup to play some games, then I may use it as a LAN box for a friend to play or something, and we'd probably want to play Quake 3 on the LAN. I'd be using my Radeon, and I was wondering how the V2s in SLI perform.

Thanks for your comment 🙂

Ahh, I see.

I might have a chance this weekend to install Q3 on my SLI box, if I do I will let you know how it works.

What CPU would you be using?

Thanks Workin' that would be great 🙂

The CPU I have spare at the moment is a Duron 650 (pending a motherboard...) or an Athlon 950 (waiting on a friend to upgrade in order for him to sell his old kit) - nothing fancy and nothing too slow basically 😀

Thanks

Those CPUs should be more than enough for a Voodoo2 SLI setup. The Voodoo2 SLI setup performs slightly worse than a V3 setup...perhaps about the same as a V3 2000 16MB, but with more memory.
Personally I'm runing a Celeron 566@850 with a 175MHz Voodoo3 3000 AGP card, and on Q3A 1.31 running at 800x600 with custom graphical settings, I'm getting around 70-80FPS on demo FOUR, so you should be expecting maybe around 50-60FPS on a V2 setup on the same settings.

Well, I just tried Q3 on my V2 SLI setup. The game is unplayable, maybe 5-8 fps. I'm guessing that's mainly due to the fact that the system it's running on is a Pentium 233, and that's the limit rather than the Voodoos...

I've run Q3A using my old SLI a while back using both my PIII500 and "classic" Athlon 700. Performance was actually pretty good using the miniGL from Wicked3D. Visual quality, being in only 16bit, was really crappy to look at though.

Workin', its definitely the CPU that's slowing it down and holding the V2 SLI system back.
