Voodoo 1 Problem!

Hey there.

I recently changed to Win ME (I like to play internet checkers! eheh) and when I tried to play games in OpenGL I have had many problems.

I am using a Voodoo 1 (Monster 3D) and if games such as SOF or Half-Life (OpenGL), the video card shuts down and the monitor turns off!! I believe it to be a Win ME driver conflict. I have tried many other drivers: 3DFX Reference, Diamond etc etc...But to no avail!! None of the drivers I obtained said they directly supported "Win ME" but the default Windows drivers also did the same thing....

I might just have to go back to 98, and miss out on playing "Internet Checkers" forever!!

Any suggestions at all??

I hear you can make big bucks selling old and rare crap to the Smithsonian Institution.

I don't think he asked if he should buy another video card, fellas.

That's happened to me before, viper. I didn't really fix it. It just sorta stopped happening. *shrug*

Could be a Directx problem,Windows Me uses ver 7 and I expect the drivers for the V1 stoped at DX ver 4. Have you run DXDIAG to see if it passes all the graphic tests

Thanks "KnightBreed" and "Broadkipa" for helping!

Yeah I might actually have to contribute some of the problems to DirectX. I ran those tests and it all screwed up as usual. So I disabled "DirectDraw" and "Direct3D" and I was able to ran Half-Life for about 5 mins in OpenGL. Best I ever got! Its really weird though, because one I was able to get out of the game after everything shutdown and go into DXDIAG and I discovered that the 3D card was not even there anymore! So that tells me, that the whole video card just powers down...Weird huh!

Oh also, I installed DirectX 8.0 a little while ago, maybe if I could uninstall it and replace it with a older version it might work again, this could be why it worked under Win 98. Anyway to remove it??

Cheers....

Ok, I found this right here.

From the site:

<< DirectX Buster is a DirectX uninstaller for Windows 95 and above. It supports DirectX from Version 5 (DirectX 3 not testet but should work properly) up to DirectX 8 inclusive all new components. >>

If you scroll down a bit to the download section. Under DirectX Buster, it says it doesn't work with Win2k, but doesn't mention anything about not working with WinME.

You can give it a try, I suppose. But before you do, I highly recommend going to Tweakfiles.com and carefully reading what files need backed up.

Good luck.:)

viper, you too my friend. Enjoy the holiday season.:)

Evilcoconut, he said he was having this problem in OpenGL. Most likely if it was a PSU problem, he'd be getting errors and such in any 3d app (be it Glide, OpenGL, or DirectX).

ArchAngel, yes I think he should as well, but not everybody has the money or incentive to upgrade. I have the money to upgrade my Voodoo2, but I see no reason to do so.
