I am building a system for a friend and he wants to have a good gaming system, but also wants great sound and the ability to record from a tv/cable/vcr input AND output to tv. If I build this system with a Voodoo 5 for the gaming aspect and add an All-In-Wonder for the tv/cable/vcr aspect will this work okay? If so, one last question. He has recently aquired the ADA-885 speakers (THX Certified, from Dell) and they speak of an S/PDIF plug-in...they say it is not required, but I wanted to know if the SB Live Platinum can handle this. If not, what can? Any and all advice is welcomed.

S/PDIF is for Dobly Digital sound and the SB Live Platinum does have the S/PDIF output on it. Just run a cable from it to your speakers.

You need a program that will support the sb live! for AC-3, i am not sure about ATI, but I know for DVD's, Power DVD will support it

I think you could probably get away with using two video cards, but ive never done it so someone else might be able to give you some insight. However, if your friend can wait, or if you can just stick a cheap video card in his system for the time being, the ATI all in wonder Radeon would probably be you best choice. However, the AIW Radeon still hasnt hit store shelves, but is supposed to in the next week or two. The AIW Radeon is basicly the same as the normal AIW video card, only it uses the Radeon chip which makes it very good for 3D games.

As for your speakers, yes the SB Live Platinum should work fine, and any new software DVD player (Cinemaster, ATI, PowerDVD, WinDVD) will be able to output Dolby Digital if your friend uses the system to play DVD's.

You'd be better off waiting for the AIW Radeon,

AFAIK, the All in Wonder cards are not designed to be run as
secondarys in a dual card configuration.

well, i'm not sure i have time to wait for the Radeon b/c my friend i am doing this for is basically "computerless" right now and i've already gotten the Voodoo 5 5500. does anyone know if the AIW (regular tv/vcr/etc., not the new Radeon) is PCI or AGP? if it is AGP, i can definitely see a problem there. but what i want to know is: will the two cards conflict or not (assuming i get a PCI version of the AIW)? thanks for the advice so far. it is helping me out a lot. =)

If your getting 2 video cards your wasting your money unless your going to have a dual monitor setup. Anyways all you need is an ATI TV wonder for the "tv/cable/vcr aspect." Right now I'm running a 64MB DDR Radeon VIVO (just dumped my V5) w/ a tv wonder that has lasted me through 3 video cards and still does the job great. Just one thing... if he absolutely needs tv-out than you will have to get something else like the All-in-wonder... but like I said, your really wasting your money with 2 video cards rather than and all solution card such as the AIW Radeon which you CAN get right now... just look around, it shouldn't be hard. I got my DDR Radeon even before the release date with no problems.
