Vons coupon: fine print

So last night I went to Vons to pickup a carton of eggs for $1.49. When I went up to check out, the cashier stated that a $10 minimum purchase was required for the coupon to take effect. Contrary to what she said, I mentioned about my previous uses of Vons coupons - which I'm somewhat sure have worked in the past (similar conditions), yet she insisted that my understanding of the fine print is incorrect. Dissatisfied with her response, I immediately went to the customer service counter. Somewhat not surprisingly the 2 employees at the counter also repeated the cashier's claims, with an inclusion that if they were to ring up the eggs alone that the register would dismiss the coupon. Suffice it to say, I left the supermarket without the eggs.

Now the fine print on the coupon states:

"This coupon must be presented at the time of purchase. Offer valid with Coupon. Limit two items per coupon. Minimum $10 purchase qualifies you for all coupons. COUPON CANNOT BE DOUBLED." etc...

From what I'm inferring here (underlined text) is that if I bought a carton of eggs for $1.49 with this coupon, that I wouldn't need to satisfy the $10 minimum purchase requirement to use the coupon unless I used another Vons coupon (for something else), in addition to the coupon for the eggs.

Now if the employees of Vons were correct, shouldn't the coupon state something along the lines of "Minimum $10 purchase applies for all coupons" or "Minimum purchase of $10 required"?

Is my comprehension of the English language lacking or is this some instance of a bait and switch type of tactic?

coupon text seems pretty clear to me. you need to spend at least $10 to use the coupons

no $10 purchase + eggs + coupon = regular price eggs
$10 purchase + eggs + coupon = $1.49 eggs

Makes perfect sense to me. I'm amused that you went to the store and then went all the way back home without buying eggs just so you could save 70 cents...

This is probably the new account of that idiot who argued with us that he could park under the "NO Stopping" sign in D.C.

Was that for a dozen eggs? That's not a sale here. I can get a dozen for less than that NOT on sale most of the time.

that's nice, be sure to buy yourself a chocolate chip cookie next time, on me.

not everyone lives within 5 miles of a large retail grocery chain.

$1.49 12 count eggs. You're getting ripped off. Krogers just had $.88 18 count eggs last week.

Depends on the quality/nature of the eggs.
Here free range eggs are about 2x the price of caged eggs, and then larger eggs cost more etc.

True, but the store in the OP, Von's is a large retail grocery chain (SoCal's version of Safeway).

I live 10 miles from a large grocery store but my town has a small mom and pop grocery store that is very well stocked and is nice for small runs like if we are out of eggs. i went and bought eggs there on Sunday morning and a 18 pack was 99 cents.

so take your chocolate chip cookie and take a hike.

the op is a idiot. the coupon clearly states what you must do to get the deal. he didn't want to do it so he left.
so to save $.70 he wasted what $1-3 worth of gas? christ what a retard.

i get my eggs from a friend that has chickens. long as i keep giving her the cartons. sometimes she does not get as many eggs so i give her a few bucks to cover feed. most i paid was $3 in one month and got like 4 dozen eggs.

So whats your real account name?
This, however I was a troller in '04, lost my account info (not banned) back then and for some time have just been lurking the forums for the past few months.

Looking and reading advice for a potential computer build brought me back here.

Vons is a little over a mile away from where I live and I was out running. I don't usually take my wallet with me on runs. In this case, all I had with me was $2 and the coupon. Figured I'd stop by Vons on the way back home.

$1.49 is expensive for eggs anyway. its $0.88 at walmart
Thanks for the info, that I did not know. :)

It's not, sorry to disappoint. ^_^

18 count, large AA

Cheapest store to buy a dozen eggs in my local area is @ Trader Joe's (SoCal store) for $1.49.

Unfortunately there isn't a Krogers near my area, but there is a Ralph's (part of Krogers) - albeit not exactly near where I live under the circumstance. However, I'm somewhat reluctant when it comes to shopping at Ralphs.

Alright I will put it in another way.

If a store offered a coupon to entice you to come in but included the stipulation in that in order to combine 2 or more store coupons (as to not lose too much profit on a single store visit), one must spend a minimum of $10. How else could they word it out?

This:

Minimum $10 purchase qualifies you for all coupons.

To me sounds like something that would fit said example above.

Hmm, I must live in expensive egg country. $1.50 for a dozen is normal here. When I was a kid the eggman used to come and drop off a couple dozen eggs every week for $1.10 a dozen. $0.88 for a dozen eggs? In this day and age? Madness.
