Vonage: Router behind a router?

So when I ordered Vonage, I asked if the "phone adapter" was just a device with an ethernet cable that connected to my router, and was told that was the case. In the mail today I get a Linksys router. How am I supposed to connect this through my SMC router?

edit: damnit, I posted this in th wrong forum too

I have my Vonage Linksys router connected to my Linksys wireless router. No problems at all.

Disable the DHCP server on the Linksys and plug cables in to the switch ports instead of the WAN/Internet port so you aren't double natting.

it is a pretty good router... I was kinda pissed that they sent me a whole router, since I really just wanted the adapter. I already have the Linksys wireless G router, so I just disabled DHCP on it and use it for wifi only, and use the vonage one for everything.

I will never again use a Linksys. For over a year now it is a well known bug that you can't play Half Life behind certian models of Linksys routers. There has yet to be a firmware update to fix this. Furthermore, the SMC router has many more feature and also has wireless, which is something I require.

Do they have just an adapter of some type?

wow, i'm glad i know things about networking, i can't believe the responses in this thread.

first thing i did was plug a PC into the switch ports, log in and enable the web interface. then i logged out, plugged the "internet" port into an empty switch port on my other DHCP-enabled router with PAT, and plugged my PC back into that other router. then when the telephone router gets an IP from my DHCP on my other router, i can use that IP at port 8080 or whatever to interface that device. the telephone router maintains an open connection, so Port Address Translation works flawlessly.

the "adapter" IS a router.

Don't cross the streams.

You know, you'd be surprised how many threads there are to which that is an appropriate response. I should macro it.

huh??

edit: and there should be no problem connecting a PC up to the switch on the telephone router. just make sure it's on a different subnet and RIP works. that's how the internet works after all.

between switches? i don't think that would even work. i think the telephone router expects calls to come in on the WAN side. there isn't even any point to this method.

Yeah, I know that. I was just wondering if there were a second adapter that was *just* an adapter without all the router functionality.

Thanks. I'll try that tonight after I finish my midterm for my class in 2 hours.

well if you tape over the switch ports on the back, there you have it ;)

this worked right off the bat for me, but i guess knowing how it works kinda helped. maybe i can draw a diagram in Paint

Yes, they do have an adapter that just hooks to your router... I think it's called the PAP2, but the linksys site isn't coming up for me at work right now. It has a single RJ45 jack to hook up to your network, and the 2 phone jacks on it. I was under the impression that's what I was getting, so when the router showed up, I was a little suprised, but no worries. I have had problems with incoming calls ringing, and wonder if the router isn't the culprit, but dealing with Vonage support is a whole different story!

Well the router is a better option regardless. It includes QOS so your surfing activities will never disrupt your phone connection.

Oy, the mighty 'tard strikes again. Simple solution...

Cable modem -> Linksys Router -> SMC router (that you seem to be attached to)

In the linksys router, just set up the IP of the SMC router as a DMZ, which will forward ALL incoming traffic to the smc (save for vonage traffic i would hope)

Boom, all your games work, vonage works, and vonage gets the QoS that the router was intended to provide.
