Volvo S60 vs BMW M235i vs C7

So I've decided it's time to ditch my 2011 Acura TL. After a little poking around the internet and talking with my car nut friends, I've come down to the Volvo S60 R-Design, the BMW M235i and the Corvette Stingray LT2.

I can get any of them for within 2 grand of $50k. I don't have kids and never will so the backseat & 4 doors are of minimal concern.

If I thought I could get one of the forthcoming Volvo S60 Polestars in that cool polestar blue, then I would. But they're not announcing US pricing or availability until June, and Canada only got 12 for the entire country, so I'm not hopeful that I can get my hands on one. The S60 R-design is pretty quick though, and the seats are very comfortable. I'm a Volvo fan at heart.

The M235i is new, and is some sort of half-measure M car. It's about as fast as the Volvo, though a little smaller and 2 door. My problem is that where I live, every 5th car is a 1/2/3 series so it doesn't really stand out.

I actually hadn't seen a new Corvette until last weekend in Houston and I was blown away. I thought it was some kind of exotic. I'd say the looks are on par with an R8. And the performance (0-60 in 3.8 seconds) is incredible for the money. The reviews are all spectacular. I'm not a race car driver, so despite all of my car friends urgings, I don't see any point in getting the Z51 package. I'm thinking white with black wheels, red calipers and black interior. The LT2 package adds the HUD and way better sound, so that's worth the money. I'd also splurge for the high performance exhaust for more power and a better sound.

I'm moving for a new job in May so I'm looking to purchase in June. I'd lease the Volvo or BMW since I'd never want to own one post-warranty, but I'd buy the Corvette Stingray.

Any thoughts on these cars? Or others to consider? I'm not interested in any Japanese cars or Audi\VWs. I did look at the CLA45 AMG but the options drive the price up near $60k. I live in Texas so weather isn't a big concern.

So 3 completely different cars?

I would wait for the polestar though, if only for the color alone. Also consider the RS4, if nothing else just for a test drive.

If you get the c7, get the z51 package. For resale, if nothing else.

Might consider a MB C350 sport. I just picked one up and its a nice car. Little faster than the volvo, little slower than the 235. (5.5-9 0-60, flat 14 around 100mph.) There is a new chassis coming out shortly for the 2015 Model year that is a turbo model as well. You'd have to look up the stats. Its usually in the shoot outs with the 335 and Cadillac ATS 3.6. AT only. Don't know if that's an issue.

Wow, you are cross shopping 3 completely different cars? You should throw a truck, a cute-ute and a minivan in there for the total WTF factor.

I'm like you. Drive all of them.

On my list is also the upcoming audi s3. but I'm not sure it'll be out in your time frame.

The volvo you could probably try to do a euro delivery. they used to give you free airfare for it, and you might be able to get access to the car you really want.

Well I still have my 2001 Ford Lighting (with a little over 700rwhp now) that just ticked over 7,500 miles, so I've got the truck covered.

I would say my trailing 4th contender is the Volvo XC60 R-design, so I'm into the cute-utes too. I drove one at a Volvo dealer and loved the interior, the space and the city braking.

Oh, and all cars will be automatics, should have mentioned that in the OP.

The cars are pretty different since I don't have any particular needs other than to drive myself to work and back. No dogs, no kids, no hobbies that require off-roading or cargo capacity. I mainly just like to be faster than most everyone else on the highway so I can drive like a jackass.

It's not a matter of waiting, it's a matter of being able to get one assuming I want to pay $60,000 for it. Like I said, Volvo Canada is getting 12, distributed through a lottery system. I don't like my odds here in the US.

I'd probably get the Vette then. It is the best performance bang for the buck short of a motorcycle.

I don't want the added weight and rougher ride of the z51. I doubt the impact on resale would be any more than the cost of the package, though I get the GM employee discount, so options are pretty heavily discounted. The C7 I would get would be an LT2 automatic coupe.

I don't really care for Mercedes, image-wise. And the 2014 Volvo S60 R-Design is faster, 0-60 in 5.3 is Volvos number. Even the 2012 model was doing 0-60 in 5.0 and the quarter 13.5. Supposedly the 2014 model is significantly quicker with an upgraded transmission.

Not really interested in Cadillac either because of their image.

Yeah, when I saw 0-60 in 3.8s and a top speed of 195mph I was flabbergasted. 10 years ago you'd need a million dollar car to do that.

Ah. First link I pulled up was like 6.3 0-60. Maybe I got an old one. Either way you're talking reasonably fast cars. Curious what the image issue of the Merc is? Caddy I know kind of has an old person's car image. Not sure about Mercedes other than it generally being tuned for luxury rather than sport. Then again you're looking at Volvo which doesn't exactly have a reputation for sport either.

Curious if you've ever owned a 2 seater before? I had a c5 for my only car for awhile. The trunk was surprisingly large, but oddly shaped. No problems with groceries, etc, but if you wanted to bring something square home from the store it had to be able to fit in the passenger seat. Not even having a small back seat meant taking people out for lunch was out of the question and when people came from out of town it meant trading cars with a friend or renting. Corvette work great as a DD, but still something to think about. It it won't be your only car, buy away. I'd get the c7 of the cars you listed if this doesn't apply.

I would get the Volvo, but I have a wife and 2 kids. If I was in your position and had another semi practical car I'd get the Stingray for sure.

Eh... I have the 2001 Lighting that's a garage\dyno queen and a 1998 Volvo S70R that's fairly hopped up and not super practical. But I mean, it has a backseat and a trunk. They both stay at my house in the suburbs, and won't be making the move to San Antonio with me. I figure I can get by with just a Corvette. The Volvo is really tempting though. Particularly the Polestar in that special blue.

Polestar is a niceee looking car. Would look great next to your S70R :D

I don't think you'll be 'missing' performance with any of these cars.

If your going to get a Vette - wait and see if the 2015's will come with the 8spd Auto - significantly better than the 6spd they currently have.

As stated earlier - Z51 is a must for resale.

Meh, looks like every other 4 door jellybean on the planet to me. In fact, it looks a lot like the current Nissan Altima IMO.

While I like both the Volvo and the BMW... this isn't a fair competition. If you don't need the practicality that the Volvo brings, and you can afford the C7... you get the C7. Neither of the other two cars will touch it as far as performance is concerned (and you still get a damn nice interior).

Ever consider the Audi S5? Or a CTS Coupe?

The S5 is wildly overpriced (and I'm not an Audi fan in general) and I don't like Cadillac's image. I did price a CTS-V Coupe and it was $60k. I might pay that much for the Polestar, but not for a Cadillac.
