I'm looking to buy a 2010 Volvo S40 R-design, found one with a silver metallic color, preferred package (moonroof, keyless entry, power front passenger seat), climate package. However it does not have the dual xenon headlights with Active Bending Light (ABL). My other option is to go with a black V50 that has the dual xenons with the ABL. I was wondering if it would be a big hassle to get the dual xenons installed in the S40 after I purchase the car? Hopefully its not a difficult install.
 
Usually it's a relatively simple matter of swapping out the entire housing and lens and replacing it with the entire HID setup from a car that had HID bulbs. However, this generally ends up costing more than simply ordering the car the way you want it from the factory. And the addition of ABL adds some complexity depending on how Volvo has the control system for aiming the lights set up.

I would recommend just ordering a car straight from Volvo that has what you want rather than buying off a lot since you're buying new anyway.

Yup, for VW, you need a new wiring harness, controller, control mechanism, new wiring, and VAG-COM to recode the ECU. You need to take the whole front end off and then some to get it all
 
from the dealer, the price of the xenon lamp housings plus bulbs and ballast would probably be in excess of two grand. just the bulbs are like $110 or so, iirc, ballast is more, housings are insane. you'll probably also need to pay $50-100 for software and an hour labor, as i would bet a switch would require flashing the light control module.

the actual 'install' part should be easy, i believe those lights are held in with two sliding brackets.
