You know that this sort of thing actually happens in EVERY state.
Just all of the focus is on Florida because the race is so close.
How bad can a county be that produces Dat'l Peppers and San Sebastian Wines???

Anyway, we could never go to the popular vote with the quality of the voting machines and personnel we have in place in the states today.

chess9 - Do you know if the Tuesday by 5 PM is a hard deadline? I can't see how Palm Beach County can finish a hand count or even be close to finishing a hand count by then. That means their results will be thrown out, as will the other counties who are trying to hand count (mainly stong Gore counties). If the Republicans fight every single ballot, even if it is pretty obvious what the vote was, they has grind the process to a halt.
With those counties thrown out, Bush wins very big in Florida. That'll force even more lawsuits.

I'm not a lawyer, so I don't have a clue. Maybe the judge can order an extension. Time is getting tight though.
TripleShot might know, although he isn't from Florida. I suspect we'll hear a lot more about the time crunch on Monday.
Gore only needs a few thousand votes more than Bush to win. The absentee votes alone would probably give Bush about a 2000 vote margin. But add in the manual recount votes for Gore and Bush, and I'm thinking 2-5,000 vote win for Gore.
Edit: Also, if the lawsuits end up in an ordered revote, the Gore vote will swell because a lot of the Bush people won't come out and some of the Nader people will vote for Bush (but not many) and ALL of the Dems will show up.
We'll just have to wait and see for sure.

By the way, I think Gore would be a fairly big winner in a Volusia County manual recount. Also, expect to see lawsuits from the black college students who are totally p*ssed off they didn't get a chance to vote because of the screwups by the Board of Elections.

Although I feel Nader is a better man, I knew he didn't stand a snowman's chance in hell of winning. I wouldn't want to give a vote to Bush.

That's one heck of an article, and when you think that the Presidency depends on only a couple of hundred votes, how in the hell can the Bush team hurry this and say that counting ballots by hand is unconstitutional.

I heard on CNN radio news, 3:00 PM my time, that suits are being prepared against the Florida Secretary of State to force the deadline to be extended.
Take a wild guess who the plaintiffs are.

My lawyer just called and told me that Gore is only up about 50 votes in Volusia County as of a few hours ago. He was disappointed the increase was so small.
Added to about 160 votes in PBC, that means Bush's lead is under about 120 votes as of several hours ago. Gore will be ahead in Florida by the time the Federal Court hears the GOP case tomorrow. Overseas ballots still must be counted of course.
Frankly, I think post-election is far more interesting than anything that happened during the election. We are living through an historical, but also hysterical, time. Just think of the stories you'll be able to tell your kids and grandkids.
