So I've known I could do this for a year or so and just now looked up how this is working.

I had heard that you could not consciously (voluntarily) dilate your own pupils.

Kind of just messing around out I could control it if I wanted to with a little trick.

Low quality video with a lot of background noise:

eye video

My gf thought it was creepy too because she also heard that pupil dilation was an involuntary action that you could not control.

Well, enjoy :p

Everyone that can focus/unfocus their eyes can do this. At least, I can.. and that's whats happening when I do it.

I surmize that your eyes use aperature as the "fine focus" mechanism...

Oh. I can unfocus my eyes at will too, just never thought to record it on video or try to look at myself in a mirror while doing it.

Guess you're not special after all :p

It took quite a while for it to show up well on a video we took. :p

I can manipulate my pupils too, but when I do this, they get really large and bright red...to the point where girls scream and run away. Not good stuff! :(

Much obliged! :D

I don't think it's your pupils which are causing the girls to scream and run away....

Now that you mention it, that chest plate does look kind of funny...

The pupil is part of the focus mechanism. The pupils will shrink down when high precision focus is required (it's called the accomodation reflex - it works like the aperture on a camera) - usually, for focusing on close objects.

Hmm.. curious though.

Lowering the f/number on a camera(making the aperature bigger) increases the precision of the focus point, while reducing depth of field.

Are your eyes opposite of this? Or what? Is the aperature in a camera only vaugly analogous to the pupil in your eyes, and not really comparable?

Which is why when your eyes require fine focus, they reduce the size of the pupil (increasing the f number and increasing the depth of field - this reduces the effect of any minor focus errors and aberrations).

The pupils will dilate (lower f number) when maximum light gathering is required (dim ambient lighting, high stress situations where reliable and rapid identification of a stimulus is required). At low light leves, the small depth of field is relatively unimportant, because the effective resolution of the retina decreases (switch from individual cone photoreceptors, to groups of photoreceptors which combine their signals).
