anybody notice this? my friend was telling me about this the other day, didnt really notice until he said something. was true for TnT, don't know about other stations...

It's usually because of the signal feed between national and local feeds IIRC.

Most TVs have a audio setting called AGC or Auto Limit

It keeps the volume the same.

Look for it in your audio settings on the TV.

I was watching ABC.com's online TV shows earlier today and it did the same thing! Very annoying.

It's called "Commercial Sound Leveler" on some SONY sets 🙂

It's intentional because people have a tendency to go to the kitchen or take a whiz during the commericials... or generally they stop paying attention, and the increased sound keeps the commercials in the game.

That and flashy scenes at the beginning of commercials are used to get people's attention. Pretty basic tv advertising rules of thumb. It's meant to differentiate their commercial from everything else; except when everyone else does it, it succeeds in nothing but pissing the viewer off.

Yeah, PVR FTW!

I kept reading that it was due to some sort of sound filtering technique that made it sound louder but technically it wasn't actually louder. Sounded like bunk to me and the posts above sound more legitimate. But PVR is really where it's at. I use MythTV.
