I have an M-Audio sound card, revolution 5.1. Latest drivers.

Windows media player, and the adobe flash player (like on youtube) allow me to adjust volume fine.

Winamp, my M-audio 5.1 driver control panel, and even windows volume control have no effect. The volume is the same if I slide it to zero.

I saw in the control panel for sound there is a checkbox for something like 'allow applications direct control of this device', it was checked, I uncheked it and rebooted with no change resulting.

I really need winamp to have volume control as I am recording out of it using their replay gain calculation feature.

How do I fix this? I assume when windows auto-updated me with some media center crap this happened.

Are you using WASAPI for your output in winamp or direct sound? You may need to switch to direct sound if you are using something like WASAPI or ASIO.

switching to direct sound gave me control in winamp. Windows mute didn't work, but a mute for winamp in windows volume did.
