Volleyball...say what?

This girl involuntarily signed me up for house-league volleyball at my school. (I have no problem with that because I secretly have a huge crush on this girl on our team:))

But the point is I have no clue how to play. Well, that's not entirely true, I know that you have to hit the ball over to the other side and that if it lands on the other side that's good and if it lands on your side that's bad.

Other than that, does anyone want to fill me in?

And yes, I have looked around on the net. And no, there is not a good game play summary that I can find.

Now you're in trouble... the girl you like is going to think you're un uncoordinated dork!

Volleyball takes some time to learn correctly. Hey, maybe the girl you like is an expert and can give you private lessons! :p

Just stand at the net and knock the balss back down on the other side when they hit them over!;)

Oh yeah..............this might be illegal and only works really well if you're at least 6'5".........;) I'm 6'7" so it worked fine for me.........;)

lol I played on the sixth-grade volleyball team when I was in elementary... got kicked off for spitting in my hand before shaking hands with the other team after we lost. Go figure.

When the ball comes to you, pass it to a good spiker, rather than hitting it over.

To spike the ball.........

First you must position yourself behind the girl you described.
When th eball comes to her, you must run up and put your hands
about her waist. In one swift movement you have to pull down her
bottoms making sure that your hands do not touch the floor or the net.
This is good for three points or a free ride in a cop car.......

Umm.. you should be able to find this somewhere, I'd imagine.. but just for starters:

When you serve the ball, it can't hit the net or it's the other team's turn to serve.
If your team served, and the ball hits the floor [within bounds] on your side, the other team doesn't get a point. They get to serve.
If their team served, and it hits the floor on your side, then they DO get a point, and get to serve again.
[The above two go the same for your team.. you only get a point if your team served, otherwise you just get the ball to serve.]

Winning score is 15, but the winning team has to have at least two more points than the losing team. 15-13, in other words. If it's 15-14, then the game keeps going until one team has two more points than the other.

Remember this: bump, set, spike. When the ball comes to your side [ideally] whoever's closest will bump it (hands clasped together and arms extended) to the person who sets it - this sets up a good position for a third person to spike it. Usually the person in the front right or front center [can't remember which] does the spiking, and the person in front center or front left does the setting, but it doesn't have to be that way. Yes, you can just hit it back to the other side in one bump, or two bumps, or whatever..

You can't hit the ball twice in a row. You CAN hit it once, then have someone else hit it, then hit it for the third time.. but your team has to get the ball back over the net in 3 hits, no matter what order you use. Make sure you don't touch the net while hitting the ball... if refs think you touched it, even if you don't think you did, the ball still goes to the other side. :|

Umm.. what else? Practice 'bumping' the ball.. there's an exact way to have your arms to get it to go in the right direction, and it's kinda hard to get it right [it is for me, anyway].

Your team rotates clockwise.. the server is in the back right corner, and on your team's next turn to serve, you rotate, so front right person serves next.

Hope that helped some.. you did say you know just about nothing about volleyball. :)

THANK YOU.

I have some questions...

I understand the bump and the set, but what do you do when you spike? (Esp. the way you use your hands)

Also, I can't serve worth two cents! If I want to use the serve where I throw the ball in the air... I toss it up, and then whack it with my right arm, yes? Do I hit it with the palm of my hand when I do this?

And about how high does one usually bump the ball?

1. Spike is when you hit the ball over with one hand. A spike usually means someone sets you the ball near the net, you jump up and smack it down hard in the other field. Since you are a begginer, you won't be doing that, I assure you.

2. Serve (basic) : Throw the ball up about 3-5 feet above your head. On its way down, start swinging your hand. You should hit the ball when you arm is at its highest point. Hit it with your palm hard enough that it goes over the net, but doesn't go outside the lines. Don't hit the ball directly in a line, but make an arc (which means hit it up and forward, not just forward).
After you have mastered that, you can start trying to put a spin on the ball..you can ask us again when you are at that level.

3. You should bump several meters (3-5metres = 10-15') so that you can give plenty of time for the player youare bumping to, to position himself and get ready.

Well, that's it for now. Good luck.

I'll tell you this, volleyball is one of the best games every when played properly. I am on my HS's senior team, and we do advanced stuff. Quick sets (you hit the ball right off the setter's hand), real spikes, complex rotation systems etc. I love it.

On the other hand, when all you do is stand around and hit the ball anyway you want...it sucks.

Don't touch the net. Some punk put me on crutches for a week because he came under the net a few years ago.

Unless this league starts play about 6 months from now, I would do whatever I could to get out of playing. You will look like a total fool. If you want to look like a total fool, go ahead and play...but it will not score you any points with the people on the team or the spectators.

<< after each point scored, it's customary to pat each other on the butt. >>

Good thing we don't do that :)

we just high five after a nice spike/block.
