A lot of the engineers I work with have VW TDis. The single guy next to me actually owns 3

There was a good article recently in Popular Mechanics about how they've basically torpedoed diesel for cars in the US. And also about how with highly efficient gas engines and hybrids it may not be that big a deal, since those vehicles get comparable mileage.

Yes, please. Take VW, Porsche and Audi to the cleaners. Fuck all the people in the US who own their cars and want their warranties and trade in values to actually mean something.

Or maybe instead you prosecute those who actually caused the problems and get the problem fixed (and an ultimate fix ends up being that you kill diesel for passenger cars. Clean diesel is a good joke.)

Prosecute all the executives and nationalize all the companies.

I'm not really sure what they think VW can do, if they're saying performance has to stay where it is. Also, are they rejecting the fix because it didn't come fast enough?

My understanding is based on the information VW provided that regulators didn't think their fix would work and whatever timetable VW proposed (speculated to be a couple years) to accomplish it was excessive.

No VW executive will ever be prosecuted in the US so you can let go of this particular fantasy. For a company to engage in this kind of activity and once fully exposed say that it was a misunderstanding is insulting in the extreme. If huge fines are the only real recourse we have at our disposal they should be used.

No, screw both the owners and VW. The VW buyers bought into the diesel nonsense because they are cheap bastards and thought they could save a buck on fuel.
Everyone knows clean diesel is a joke, anyone paying any attention would realize diesels are dirty and cause lung disease, cancer and heart attacks.
The sooner diesel autos are banned the better.

Erm, you do know that most people don't know anything beyond "clean diesel" that marketing tells them (and regulators also endorse as being safe)? But hey, fuck the consumer, they deserve to be punished...
