those brands you mention are actually wholly-owned subsidiaries. they operate rather independently from the rest of gm and ford.

Yeah...but it's the same NYSE stock, isn't it?

That's only the beginning of it.

For example, engines from one manufacturer can end up in anothers' car. Much of the current Alfa Romeo lineup uses GM V6 engines, while FIAT (parent company of Alfa, ironically enough) builds diesel engines used in many other manufacturers' cars, including the Vauxhall Vectra - a GM product. While Isuzu only really makes one car, you can find their engines all over the place, and Lotus - despite being owned lock, stock, and barrel by Proton - uses nothing but engines from their competitor Toyota.

And then there's the mash-up of Italian build quality and Japanese blandness known as the Nissan Cherry Europe. We don't like to talk about that one.

Car companies making or selling parts to other competing companies is nothing new.

My 83 Austin Maestro had a VW manual trans and had both the VW and Audi logos stamped on it.

Very cool chart. Honda seems pretty isolated - weren't they selling engines to GM at some point?

Didn't know Daimler still held ~20% of Chrysler.
Didn't know Renault owned Mack trucks.
GM, VW, and Toyota seem to have their fingers in everything.

That's just an ownership chart - Honda has sold engines to anyone who will buy them.
