Volcano II & stuff.....

Hello. I've been doing a lot of research on heatsinks and I've narrowed it down to four. I'm planning on buying a 1.4 GHz Athlon T-bird (which I won't be overclocking). I'm looking for a combination of a good price, high performance, and low noise and I also don't want anything that's real heavy (sounds idyllic eh? ;-). The ones I've found meet most of my criteria (according to reviews) -- but I'm needing some first (or second) hand opinions and info. So if you own any of the heatsinks on my list, or know someone who does and how they like it, please post any info you have. Thanks!

The contenders (with avg. prices from pricewatch.com):

Thermaltake Volcano II ($9.00)
Molex 371560008 (n/a) -- know where I can find prices on this one?
Taisol CGK760092 ($32.00)
Alpha PAL6035 ($30.00)

One other thing, will I need to buy a fan for my chipset?

Thanks in advance,

I'd go with the Taisol. I have the thermoengine, volcano 2, and some generic ones. Volcano 2 have to replace fan. Thermoengine same story. Need to replace both the high CFM low DBA like YS Tech. The volcano 2 stock fans is too noisy and doesn't work that well.

I've heard nothing but good about Taisol CGK and may buy that soon.

Either the Taisol or the Alpha would be a nice choice.. I'd especially recommend the Alpha 6035MFC with the Sanyo Denki 60mm 19 cfm 28db fan since your not overclocking that's the absolute best way to go.. it's a very quiet and high quality combo..

Make sure you use Arctic Silver 2 Thermal Grease with any of those heatsinks (you have to with the Alpha) and put it on in place of the pad if u get the Taisol or V2

I've got the Alpha PAL 6035. Love it. Keeps my CPU nice and cool (1.333 Tbird not OC). I actually took the fan from a Volcano II and stuck it on there and the setup cools very nice (30C idle, 43C load). I don't think it's that noisy, but then again, my case fans may dround it out. But they aren't that loud either.

In any case, it's no where near some of the really noisy fans, like the Delta38.
