How is the Volcano 7+? Is it a good HSF for overclocking an Athlon 2100+ on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe Mobo?

Talk to me plz.

It's pretty good, the best Thermaltake offering, and bested only by Thermalright, Swiftech, and Alpha coolers, and that jet Coolermaster heatpipe thing.

It's also, since it says 'Thermaltake' on it, way too loud. Get one of the heatsinks mentioned above (except the coolermaster) and slap a Panaflo L1A or quiet NMB fan on it.
Cooling at least on par with the V7+, but much quieter.

Wow you're making this complicated. I just preferably want a HSF combo for a decent price so I can pump up my Athlon 2100+ TBred B. Now I"m all confused. Where can I get this stuff?

From SVC:
Thermalright SLK-800
Thermalrigth SK-7 - not quite as good, but a better value.
Swiftech MCX462-U - much more expensive than the above two.
Thermalright SLK-900 - the latest and greates, with a price tag similar to the Swiftech.
Alpha PAL8045 The last three mentioned use the motherboard mounting holes around the processor, while the first two use the socket lugs.
Panaflo L1A 24cfm, 21dB and unsurpassed reliability.
NMB Ultra-Quiet 18cfm, <18dB.

Best combo for performance and value?
Go with the SK-7 and the Panaflo L1A. The SK-7's performance is less than the other Thermalright heatsniks, though only marginally, and it's quite a bit less expensive than every other heatsink listed.
$20 for the heatsink coupled with $7 for the fan, and you've got a top of the line performer, and you will be able to actually hear when your HDD starts up :D
About $6 more than the V7+ at SVC.

Also...the thing sounds good. But the panaflo 1800 RPM? Dats like gonna let my overclocked cpu fry to oblivion. OUcch.

The Panaflo has good results, even for overclockers. If you'd feel better with something else,
get the Y.S. Tech 3-pin adjustable fan or the Thermaltake Smart Case Fan 2. If you go with the Thermaltake, take the steel grill off for much quieter operation.

I'm on SVC's mailing list (sales and such), and it just so happens that this morning they sent me a newsletter that had this in it:
Our resellerratings are 9.33 for the month of February (6.92 for the past 6 months), and they will continue to rise. To speed the process, and to promote the rating of vendors in general, SVC will be giving out a FREE CLEAR ACRYLIC CASE on March 31 to a randomly selected customer who has left resellerratings for SVC. To qualify, you must (1) leave a resellerrating, and (2) email freecase@svc.com with your order number and your resellerrating user id. The winner will be announced at www.svc.com no later than March 31, 2003.

If you'd feel better with a different retailer, The Heatsink Factory is awesome, but considerably higher priced than SVC.

I got a Volcano 7+ about a month ago from Gameve. I don't know if it was just me, but that thing is insanely heavy, and it's so hard to put on / take off of the CPU interface. I had to put so much pressure on the motherboard, I thought it was going to crush my CPU core.. and as a matter of fact, I might have crushed the core because I had to RMA my tbred 2100 for unknown reasons. My friend ordered his slk-800 hs at the same time as me. The slk couldn't be easier to put on. I hardly had to put any pressure onto it to get it to snap on the clips. I'm sure the sk700 is even easier, because it is a little bit smaller if I'm not mistaken. Fan mounting on the SLK-800 is so elementary.. takes literally 5 seconds with no screws necessary. SO.. while the V7+ is a good hs.. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're VERY good at slipping on heatsinks. Ha.. and that fan.. sounds like a jet engine when its turned on high.

Exactly ;)
Thermalright heatsinks are crafted with so much more integrity, there really is no comparison.

I love it when people don't actually read the thread...

FearoftheNight: do you mean the heatsink or the fan to the heatsink?

i had no problems installing my V7+
but i agree, the Volcano 7+ has a noisy fan. but if your pervious heatsink had a Delta 60mm screamer, you'd say it's quiet;)
but it gives me good temps on high
38c-case
43c-cpu load
ambient temp is somewhere is between 27-35c:Q(yes, malaysia is hot)
