Although heavily focused on Asterisk, voip-info.org has tons of great info.

Note that, in typical Cisco fashion, they have their own protocol suite (SCCP/Skinny) and also support the standard protocols (SIP mostly, some products also H.323 et al.), they support different features with different protocols, and when taking an exam the right answer is always the Cisco proprietary answer.

CVOICE will teach you a lot about Cisco voice. The CCNA Voice tract, from what I've seen, will teach you a bit of the basics and generalities.

Really, though, especially with voice, there is no substitute for experience. There are so many nuances that they can't all be collected into a book. Every company, every brand, every location...they're all slightly different.

yeah thats the other thing: we werent given any real information about what this class or book was until 2 days before it started. so when i registered back in march i expected an intro to voice lke the ccna voice...but thats not what i got.

surprise to me, oh well

mostly i just want to get it over and learn a few things while im at it, not become a pro or expert. im taking a vsphere class at the same time and id much rather spend extra time on that at this point.

Well, it's interesting. There's two tests that will get you a CCNA Voice cert... You can take CVOICE or the new one. CVOICE, being required for CCVP, is the obvious choice. That said, from what I've seen, you need to have some background in voice in order to properly grasp the material.
