Orrrrrrrrr

Is it better to have a $40/mo. phone bill w/ local calling only (basically just to take inbound calls, call the local pizza joint & just *have* a land line phone in the house)

You should be able to get the land line down below $40. Before I got SR I have my Verizon service at $28/mo including caller id and all taxes. Make sure you call and have long distance capabilities completely removed from the phone. Even if you don't call long distance in a given month there's still a couple dollars in taxes.

Mine tends to be a bit choppy when I'm maxing out the bandwidth, and there is some interference from either the fluorescent lights or EM from my monitor.

S.A.,

Thanks. Ya, I actually tried already. My bill is actually right at $37/mo. And that's just as you had mentioned..........Nothing........Zip, Zilch, Nada but local calling. (Even had to pay Verizon $5 when I discontinued long-distance service, grumble, grumble) but even then I notice my monthly bill is right at $37 every month.

That's what made the SR deal look so good to me. (Or even VOnage for that matter)

Which (I think) still brings me back to the possibility that perhaps this is a matter of getting what you pay for????

(I think I'm going to add 2 polls)

It helps to power cycle the gizmo every onc ein a while. Leave it unplugged for at least a minute and then let it boot back up. Seems to help me when I do that every so often.

Well... as long as more and more pple are going to get the VOIP thing, why would you keep paying 40 bucks/month to stay with your land line if the person you're going to talk to is using VOIP.

I mean, as long as 1 of the 2 person in the conversation is using VOIP (and then possibly bringing down the quality of the call), why do you want to be the one that pays more for the same crap ?

Actually, you bring up a good point.

But that's *IF* VOIP catches on. Who knows?? Maybe VOIP will go the way of the Betamax cassette??

Maybe land-line will win out in the end after all???

There sure is a lot of copper phone line pre-plumbed all over the world!!!!

Everything is moving over to IP - voice, video and data. Something like 90% of the traffic of all the telephone networks are data

I have Vonage and a 6000/384 cable connection. I also have a WRT54g router with QOS enabled to give the phone adapter bandwidth priority. I never have voice quality problems at all except for the rare occasion when I use bittorrent.

I've had Sunrocket for about 2 years: been the worst quality for the last few weeks: can't seem to find a network status page, either............... wonder if it's Time Warner???

Never had any problems with Packet8. I've been with them for about 4 years now.

Yep, whether the end user knows it or not, most telecom back bones are already packet switching based instead of circuit switching based. The trend is now to extend the packet switching into the user's premise, to eliminate that one last local loop of analog signals.

That's another good point.

Not even whether or not another end user is VOIP, but regardless.........you might as well go with the lowest common demoninator, no??

Why pay all the extra if it's shifting more & more to IP switching anyway, right?

(Very good points that I never considered!)
