VOIP Explanation needed please

We recently switched over to using voice over IP for our phone system. We did not have any onsite equipment besides our phones and the internet connection to get the our service providor.

Our service provider went out of business and neglected to tell us. So now I'm stuck in a rut.

If we were to buy our own call manager what all would we need and how much would it cost (estimate) to get it all working?

How is long distance handled? Where is the call manager linked to the phone lines at the telco.

I'm really confused and need an explanation.

We only have one building and about 15 phones.

Thanks
Mike

You'll still need a service provider to connect you to the telecom world, and to connect your calls to the appropriate carriers. If you got your own call manager, it would still need to be connected to a provider somewhere in order to terminate the calls.
