My concept of VoIP:
Real time audio being streamed over multiple networks. (Not much more than that I guess)

What's the big deal? Is it that you can have network-to-phone communication?
Hasn't that been around for a while? (Ventrilo, Skype)
Or is it just now getting large, and that's why its popular (circular logic, yes)? Business VLANs..?

I was just wondering if I could get some info.

Also, why the montly cost?

the key is that analog is a pain to manage and route ; voip is is completely digital even before it leaves the phone so packets can be throttled, prioritized, run over the same lines as data, and managed like a tolitarian regime...

Sure, basic consumer voip adapters and services and general SIP and asterix are great tools that show off amny great aspects of voip, but voip really shines in an enterprise enviroment where you need to manage dozens if not many more clients.

From being able to just 'plug in' a voip phone to an ethernet jack and transfer settings and prioities and such to being able to get inter-office and remote to remote communication at a bargain price....it's all important and voip is so much more powerful than a pbx that depends on phone lines...
