VoIP and a monitored alarm?

I am looking into a VoIP service to start with next year. I have done a bit of research but I am curious about supporting a an alarm. I assume that alarms call out using a system similar to a fax so if you got something like Vonage you would need to pay for the second fax line to use the alarm. My parents have the AT&T service that lets you send and receive faxes on the line for the base price but they don't have a monitored alarm to test it on.

Is this an issue or is this something that would work over any carrier's normal line?

I have Vonage set up with our monitored system. We test it every other month or so and haven't had any problems.

The alarm is capable of two-way voice communication, so it requires a full blown phone line. I'd recommend a cellular backup, though, especially with VOIP.

I just got a cellular "backup" for my alarm system so I could drop the landline. Which, doesn't really make it the "backup" anymore. But, you get the idea.

It works great, can be pricey, but I was really mad at the phone company.
