I've been facing a peculiar problem for sometime now. All voices in all my multimedia files (games, movies, music, ...) are very faint. Rest of the sound is heard but not with the usual clarity. Some portion is missing but it being sound, I cannot describe what exactly is missing. One thing I can tell for sure is that the voices are all very faint like they are whispering or something or they are in the background. I use on-board sound (Realtek HD Audio). I use a pair of cans for output (Sennheiser HD 202) and no there isnt any problem with them. The problem crept up quite suddenly. My 1 year old nephew did something (banged some keys on the keyboard) when I wasnt around and I have this problem now (atleast I guess this is a possibility).
Ed: Oh and I discovered something else, When I direct all sound output to any one channel (L/R), I get the voices back with the usual clarity but the output becomes mono with output in both channels. The funny thing is it doesnt matter to which channel I direct the output: I get the (mono) output in both channels rather then getting all the output in only one channel leaving the other channel mute.
I have reinstalled codecs (k-lite 5.7) and the realtek sound drivers. I have checked at the Realtek control panel. The input jack is being correctly identified as a headphone input.
I'm at my wits end here with a clean installation of XP looming as the only solution. Can someone help avert this, please?
