voice recording with media player ?

hi

i have a headphone / mic setup, and i would like to be able to record some simple voice wave files which i may use as messages.

however i cant find any voice record options within microsoft media player 10. found CD/DVD recording, ripping, mp3 converting etc.

everything except for the simplest thing that i need, which is to be able to record my voice straight into a wave or MP3 file.

i looked through the built-in help, the help provided on microsoft website, still nothing, only recording stuff seems to be for CDs mp3s and whatnot, nothing about voice from a mic.

can someone please help, tell me how to do this or may be kind enough to provide a direct link to what i am missing, i really need something that could simply walk me through the recording process step-by-step.

thanks

Windows has a dedicated sound recording program built in.

Look in the Start->Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->Sound Recorder

Note that you shouldn't confuse playback (volume) levels with recording levels. When you pull up your mixer what typically shows is just the playback, and adjusting this only effects the level sent to your speakers, not what is being recorded to file. If you record your voice and the sound is way too quiet or loud (splattered/distorted) you'l need to open Volume Control, then options, properties, check recording and make sure microphone or whatever line your plugging into is checked. Adjust from there.

You can also mute the mic (or other) line on the playback side of the mixer so your own voice isn't coming through the speakers while recording, which can be annoying or cause feedback.
