voice recording on the computer

I am searching for information of sound recording with the mic using the laptop.
Right now, I have a SoundBlaster MP3+ USB soundcard and a fairly nice microphone from Sony(around 1oo bucks). However, the background noise is just too much whenever I start recording voice.... even in a quiet place.

When I use my MD player and the sony Microphone to record, I have a nice quality. Can someone help me out and teach me what I should do properly in order to get a nice quality of the voice live recording?
Thanks

Alex

Not sure about the USB setup but my CLabs has a +10db option for the Mic Volume which I leave off and it's records aesthetically more pleasing.
