Voice Modem

"Voice" is actually used as a label for several modem facilities.

TAM

Telephone Answering Machine: When the modem supports TAM, it is possible to implement a professional voice response system with the accompanying software. This means that you can set up an answering machine that will present the caller with choices of whom (several in-boxes) to leave a message for, receiving of fax, possibility for the caller to enter his fax-number and have a fax on a certain topic sent to him (called fax.back). The audio functions are designed to be used with the internal microphone and speaker (if present), external connectors for microphone and speaker (if present) or with your SoundBlaster card, or a telephone.

ASVD

Simultaneous Voice Data: SVD makes it possible to establish a modem connection to another SVD modem and at the same time conduct both voice and data communications. This way, you can team play games over the phone and still be able to communicate and devise strategies. Other possibilities include long-distanced learning.
SVD does not make it possible to call one number with a data connection and call a second number for voice connection.

So basically, "voice" just means it can be used for basic phone functionality as well as pure data transmission
