VOB to AVI/MPG converter?

I have the VOB files from my DVD's.... how the blazes to I squash 'em doen to a CD of AVI or MPG? All the utilities I've found are confusing as heck. Isn't there a program that you can feed VOB files into and tell it what compression ratio you'd like?
