VOB files

What program is best to play vob files? I don't like Media player classic and don't seem to like powerdvd (loaded audio but no video). Looking for something else to try.

Thanks, that looks pretty good. Still not getting any video though, just a black screen, so i guess i need some kind of codec or something, i already have a bunch of video codecs installed, nothing for VOB/DVD stuff though

PowerDVD plays them....

If there is more than one VOB file in what you're trying to play, then its probably a movie and it might not play... so try opening the other VOB files.

Hrm, i dunno, i havent run into a codec that i havent had in a while. Got the K-lite codec pack in now, maybe divx or xvid too, i dunno. Guess i'll have to get a diff codec pack? Most videos currently work fine. I'm certain there should be video in these vob files i have

Your problem is likely using too many codecs, and you developed a conflict. VOB files can only contain MPEG-2 video. If you replaced your standard MPEG-2 codec with another, that may cause a problem.

Try reinstalling PowerDVD first. Make sure none of your codec packs are trying to decode MPEG-2...

I guess i just had to disable overlay or something, why it is on by default i don't know, does it not cause problems for most people?

Anyway, i'll stick to VLC, PowerDVD is too obtrusive, and hijacks all my video formats when i don't want it too.

So, problem solved 🙂

If overlays don't work right, that's generally a problem with your video card drivers.

As long as you got it to work that's fine.

Weird. Ah well.

Now i have a much more difficult task to complete, if it's even possible. I want to rip some audio from parts of the DVD (vob files) no idea what to do though, or if it's even possible. Just need to take certain parts of the DVD such as (00:00:00 to 00:04:00 - ie the first 4 mins of the DVD), and rip them to MP3. How would i go about doing that if it's possible?

That's easy enough.

Use the tool DGIndex, formerly known as DVD2AVI. Download DGMPGDec which includes DGIndex.

Save the program anywhere, open your VOB files, set your in and out points using the "[" and "]" buttons. Go to Audio, and maybe you'll want to decode the mp2 or ac3 audio to pcm. Then go to "save project" which will output your audio and another file that you won't need.

The program isn't made for doing just this, but it's easy enough to do.

Once you have it as a .WAV file I'm sure you can work with it from there right?

Thanks for the help. I think i've got it. In Output method i have it set to Decode AC3 track to Wav, not sure if that's exactly what i want to do or not, but it sounds right. After i went and checked out the WAV file it sounded good, had a weird bitrate (158?)...or maybe a normal one, i'm not too familar with wavs. I'm sure i could figure out how to convert them to MP3 easily, any good suggestions for which program to do that with? 😛 - I'm also concerned about the quality of the audio, i want it to be the best it can be. I might just leave them all as WAV files after i'm done with them.

The best freeware MP3 encoder is probably still LAME - which can be used in many programs.

Try BeLight which is an easy-to-use GUI for BeSweet.

I don't know what that is, just try it. 😛 Anything that uses LAME should give similar quality.

Got all the rips done, still just wav files. The sound quality isn't too bad, but the volume seems to keeping going up and down on it's own, not sure why it's doing that. Are you sure there's not a better way to rip these from VOB files?

bump...i've had this problem in the past with audio volume going up and down during the course of the track, anyone know what causes that?

So is there still a way to rip these WAV files into LAME VBR mp3s? That's what i want to do now if possible. What program can do that for me? I guess EAC (exact audio copy) cant.

bump

Got all the audio ripping done long ago. Though i still have 6 ".d2v" files, can i convert those to avi or mpeg or something? If so, what program do i use? I got so many programs lately i forgot which does what.

What are you trying to do now?

If I recall correctly, D2V is a frameserving file produced by DVD2AVI. You could use that to convert to MPEG.
