vnf4 Ultra and post 50 AGAIN! Best 939 nf4 ultra mobo?

I'm about to say something I didn't think I could ever say about any piece of computing hardware.

The Chaintech VNF4 Ultra is a piece of junk.

I've just had the post 50 issue occur a second time on a mobo that was a replacement mobo (it has the newer active cooling fan) for the first mobo which I got at the beginning of the year. I think this is a heat based issue even with adequate cooling. (~110F regularly). It could be a electrical signaling issue with USB, but I barely change my USB devices.

So, I call out to all 939 NForce4 Ultra owners:

Who leaves their computer powered on 24/7? What mobo?
Who has had repeated issues requiring RMA for their mobo? Possibly heat or USB/Electrical issues?

Is this too much too ask for with these newer systems? I've never EVER had an issue leaving my computers on 24/7 before. I don't live in Arizona or anything. I have mild weather and I don't OC my system.

I don't have any crazy USB system. I have a single USB mp3 player that I've had for 4 years. It doesn't cause a problem on my computer at work. I have a usb mic that is never on.

What other mobo out there has performed well under these "stressful" conditions? 😉

Looking for answers (and another mobo),

The post 50 error I speak of is the BIOS post code 50 that seemingly randomly appears one day as you go to reboot your VNF4-Ultra based computer. It is suposed to be related to USB. They tell you to unplug your USB devices and reboot. Yeah, great idea...cept thats not the real issue. Some component has permanently fried.

I swear I got woken up by something from in my apt a few nights ago. I bet it was this cheap mobo fryin.

Thanks for the feedback rise4310. I'm thinking about the EPOC or the DFI currently. I want to hear some praise of these systems running long hours before I choose.

you need to go to PCPER forums, there are guys running over 3.0ghz on the thing

I have one that I swapped out for a Neo4-F, clocks like mad and was super stable.

I've used three NF4 boards w/my Winnie 3200+ and the Chaintech got just as high as the MSI= 2.62ghz and auto reboot🙂 and much higher than the Abit.

what it lacks is
1) memory dividers
2) lots of useful voltage settings/increments
3) kind of undervolted everything just a tad (vs. my Neo4-F, same PSU)

but I had mine running overnight at 350x7=2450 stable and though the chipset cooler was quite warm to the touch, it probably would have gone higher I suppose

Thanks for the feedback cobbler and najames. I'll head over there and ask for input now. (as you can tell I'm running a little behind on my old PC here 😉 )

Isn't a post 50 error caused when the computer tries to boot off of a USB mass storage device and cannot(i.e. a USB MP3 player?)?

@doomguy - post 50 may also be useful for such problems, but its apparently what you get when the USB chipset is fried. If unplugging everything (yes everything inside too) still results in a post 50 code, your USB chip is fried. RMA it.

@blipblop
Demand a motherboard that handles static a little more reasonably. 🙂 Never ever been an issue on any computer I've owned before...

I'm gonna have to agree with ITloser on at least one thing. I've had 2 NF2 Chaintechs, and they've been nothing but trouble in the long run...just not worth it.

i hope that this won't be a problem, maybe i shouldn't have like so many usb things all plugged in, it all goes to a hub... but i'll give it a nother shot when my board comes, if not, any suggestions on another board that won't break the bank? thanks

@blipblop - I would hope a hub would help in this matter, but I'm not sure of the layer 1 concerns there. If a USB hub doesn't ground well, you could still have the issue, I would think.

@Undersea - No one could provide a solution to get past the issue, I sent the mobo in...again. I at least have the brand new v6 BIOS, so we'll see if that makes a difference. I asked support about the possible (wait, likely) situation where this problem occurs in another 4 months. Right about when my 1 yr warranty expires. I wanted to make sure that they would replace the mobo if this issue happened again at that time. It sounds like they will make good on it if I'm a few weeks over.

ITloser,

I will admit to being a chaintech fan. They are qirky boards. I really like that new Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe: NVIDIA Dual x16 for the Athlon 64 as seen on this site. Buts its like $240. I know for me thats why I have the chaintech board. For that price I could by 4 chaintech boards. I think your due some better luck this time.
