I got a BFG 6800 GT a week and a half ago and RMAd it because i thought it was the card. I got my new one today and its doing the same thing. Everytime I try to play a game the game will run for a few seconds then freeze. It is not a permanent freeze but a choppy freeze where it freezes for 10 seconds then runs for a second then freezes again. I tested the 6800 GT at a friends house and it works fine. But, my old 9800 pro works fine in my system. What could be making the 6800 GT not work but let my 9800 pro run fine? My system specs are...

Athlon 64 3000+
Chaintech VNF3-250
2x512mb PC3200 Kingston ValueRam
Maxtor 40gig 7200rpm HD
BFG 6800 GT OC
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Thermaltake 480watt Silent Purepower PSU

I'd try and e-mail chaintech and ask them wtf might be up? 480 watts should be enough - i don't think it has much to do with your power supply. Did you install the 6800 gt off of a fresh install of windows ? Or just uninstall the drivers and plug it in?

I used driver cleaner when i installed. I did not reformat this time because i tried it with my first GT and it didnt help.

I have the same board and the same video card- no problems.
What card did you have in your system previously? Anytime I've used DriverCleaner, it's screwed up my system (more than once).

Then it might be power supply related- the GT power requirements aren't as steep as with the Ultra, but it's worth the upgrade. I would think your PSU would be adequate- it's hard to say. I just bought one of the new OCZ Technology
PowerStream PSU's. I have the 420W (about $100) and it is the BEST! Also has a 5-year warranty. Read some of the reviews at the bottom of the page. It even has separate connectors for your video card and hard drive. The power level is also adjustable.

Seems the voltage of the +12V rail is one of the most important factors for the 6800's.

Can I plug an extra molex connector off of another computers PSU into the video card to test it or does it have to be run off my power supply? If I can do this I can just take my comp to a friends house and test the PSU theory.

I would think you could.
Just turn on it's power before you boot up yours.
(Make sure everything's unplugged from the wall before switching all the cables around.)
A good AT type supply would be easier to work with.

YMMV

I tested it out on another PSU and it still had the same problem. I put my old 9800 pro back in to make sure it still works fine and it runs perfect.
