VNC / Remote desktop question(s)

Ok im trying to get something setup set up to let me accsess my desktop from any computer via a web browser, Now I can/have done this with UltraVNC im just consernd about how secure it is. I have the Encryption plug in and workes with server<--->viewer but not with a browser, atleast as far as I know.

Next problem is when useing ultra and useing a browser to view when i try 256 colors or full the view will flash, and i cant figure out why/what would be causeing this. Also my desktop is on 1280*1024 its a pain to view from my laptop which is alot smaller, And theres so way to scale it to fit the viewer screen or anything...

So dose anyone know of a vnc that might work better for me? Or any other kind of service, that will let me securely view my desktop from any computer. forwording ports on the server side is no problem. I also have DDNS setup/can use.

Any info/imput/siggestions greatly apresheated.

if XP pro, using remote desktop is fine.

Ultra VNC is still very good. As far as getting it to work wit ha browser, I have not done it (never needed to) but appearantly it ahs a built in web server that makes a java applet or something.

Personally, I use an SSL secured page and terminal services web client.

Example: here I am accessing remote desktop via a browser and via the termina lservices activex plugin. Basically, Remote desktop is very secure, and I went a step further, and compeltely secured it using an SSL page. THis of course is quite paranoid of me, as the remote desktop client will do fine:D

I know ultraVNC and most others like it have a java applet, ive got it working and have tryed it, Thing is im just worryed about how secure it is as i want/need a way to accsess my desktop via any computer, a computer that might not have windows remote desktop. As for one of my computers to another one of my computers over the net i have that allworked out, So bacicly just need a vary secure (or as secure as possable) way to accsess my desktop from any computer via web browser.

as for the last part of your post, I have hardly an idea of what you did, lol.

Ive got ultraVNC encryption set up and have had it working with ultraVNC to ultraVNC the actual program, Question is with encryption enabled on the server side will java/web baced viewer be encrypted?

good question...probably is my guess sicne it will require the encryption key to conenct....that siad, I've never used the java plugin

Ok well encription deffently dosent work via web. So any one have any ideas as to what would work good for me? Or anyone know how secure the web/java is?

What is wrong with the VNC Viewer that pushes you to insist on the Java Interface?

Need web baced for when I dont have accsess to ultraVNC viewer.

RDP? Dosent that go on servers?

The encryption package includes a file MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm which produce a key that does not need a registry pointer but can be put in the VNC server directory.

You can copy the vncviewer.exe file from the installation directory with the MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm and the generated encryption key to a Flash drive (I think they even fit on a floopy).

I know that vncviewer.exe by it self without encryption on a flash drive works this way.
I did not tried it with encryption, but I do not see a reason why it should not work with the NoReg encryption.

Edit: I tried on my system and it works.:thumbsup:

There is one caveat. The updated encryption generate a file name new_rc4.key

I had to change the name to rc4.key (drop the new_) on the server and the flash drive viewer. I do not know why, it might be that my viewer and the computer with the VNC server do not have the same version of VNC.

So the same rc4key, and the MSRC4Plugin_NoReg.dsm that generated it in the Server directory and on the Flash Drive.

RDT is very good too, and I use in installations that are totally under my control with systems that meant to be use frequently (like from my own personal desktop to my Server).

But when you have variety of computers that might not have or support RDT. When you are temporarily controlling computers of clients that do not know how to deal with RDT and thus might put at risk, or when you are else where and need to connect to your computer and the controller is not your computer. Ultr@VNC is simple and once you close it it is out of the system.

I install VNC sever and the IP2 program (http://www.ezlan.net/ip_mac#IP2 ) and put two shortcuts on the clients desktop.

I leave a peace of paper instructing the client to double click on the ip2 program and write down his external IP, and then to double click on the VNC server, call me and give me his external IP. When I am done they know how to close the program, and that?s it out of the picture.
