hey guys. i'm looking into finding a free vnc client to connect to remote users systems. previously i was using freevnc and it seemed to work ok. recently, i had a friend install it and i couldn't connect to their machine with it. i usually have them go to www.whatismyip.com to get their ip and it will connect afterwards. i don't know if they had a firewall though. any ideas? i downloaded ultravnc as it seems to be popular around here. any other ideas?

Thanks,
Al

UltraVNC works pretty well for me. Be sure and install the updated hook driver for better performance.

i'll check into the hook driver. how to you tell people to setup their machiens? how do you obtain their ips, get through firewalls, etc.?

I'm an UltraVNC user myself. Here are some links to help you out, pick whichever one helps solve your problem:

UltraVNC Repeater
Open only 1 port to a computer inside your local network, connect to it as a proxy to VNC into other computers inside that network
http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/addons/repeater.html

UltraVNC Viewer (Listen Mode)
In the default UltraVNC install
Allows connection to initiate from the server, so no firewall/port/proxy mess to deal with

UltraVNC SC (SingleClick)
http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/addons/singleclick.html
Like the Listen Mode, but ONLY outgoing server connection, no installation, must manuallly execute everytime

Usually when I set up UVNC on somebody's computer, I automatically set up a password and forward a port to their computer. If they have dynamic dns, great, if not, I bookmark checkip.org for them.

You might want to look into that firewall thing :p Nothing's going to help you if there's a firewall in the way.
