VMware Fusion License length

I am thinking about getting VMware Fusion.

How good is the license for? If a new version of Fusion comes out, do I have to buy it to get it?

I think point releases are free, 3.x, etc... New full versions require an upgrade fee.

Correct. The only outlier to this is the free 1.x->2.x upgrade, which was a one-time thing. VMWare apparently felt that their 1.x customers didn't get a product worth the price (or more likely, the good PR was worth the cost). The inevitable 3.x upgrade will not be free.

Since VMWare keeps Fusion and Workstation synchronized (Fusion is just a Mac version Workstation with a more user-friendly UI), really the question is when VMWare Workstation 7 will drop. I know that Workstation 7 entered an early private beta back in June, but I don't know much beyond that. Presumably Workstation 7 and Fusion 3 will be launched at the same time later this year, but it's anyone's guess when that will be. Given that VMWare likes to do some kind of public testing, I wouldn't think it would be until late September at the earliest.
