I'm attempting to reinstall Win98SE on a Dell. I format the drive, run through the installation, but on the second reboot, I receive the message that "vmm32.vxd is either missing or unreadble". I am able to boot into safe mode and the file is there. I've also attempted to replace the file with another and that didn't work.

Here are the specs:
Windows 98SE
PII 400Mhz
64MB RAM
8GB HD
Montego Sound card
ATI Rage 128 Graphics card
Fore ATM NIC

I've disconnected all external peripherals so it's not a scanner related issue. I removed the CD during the reboot to see if it would help since I believe some Gateways had a similar issue that was solved by removing the CD during the reboots. I have yet to remove PCI cards because I thought I might check here first. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!

Also, I've tried the advice found in this thread with no luck. vmm32.vxd

This can also be caused by 1)too-overclocked processor (or just an overheating one) or 2)memory errors. Visit www.simmtester.com and download DocMem to give your memory a test, and have a look to make sure the fan near your heatsink is functioning.
