I am having problems installing a 64 bit OS VM on a base 64 system.

Does anyone know if this can be done?

It can be done, but it depends on your VM program. Virtual PC 2007 does run on 64bit host OS's, but will only run 32bit guests. I was surprised about this when I tried to run 64bit Windows 7 for testing on my Mac Pro in Windows Vista 64.

I can however run 64bit Windows 7 in VMWare Fusion in OS/X (a 32bit OS) on the same Mac Pro just fine.

Sure, you can even run a 64-bit guest on a 32-bit host running VMware as long as your CPU supports VT.

Which VMWare? I am using VMware workstation and it gives the usual hardware not 64bit compatible bla bla.

What does? The guest when you try to install it?

Yes, the vm of Vista 64. I just tried it again with the same result. Any special trick to get it working? I know you can run a 64 vm on a 32bit OS, this is strange.

You've gotta make sure the VM is set to 64-bit when you go through the wizard.
