I have the latest version VLC Player 2.2.4

Could it be my WD Black 4 TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive just for my data which is where all my videos are? Only 1.5 TB is used.

Oh yeah this is on the latest version of Windows 10.

Had the same problem with VLC (an earlier version) then moved on to potplayer and smplayer. Those 2 programs don't have bundled adware, at least for now.

IIRC I had this problem in the past. It had sometime to do with scanning all the files in the current directory when it opens a file. I don't know if I fixed it by upgrading to a new version or changing some setting.

In my case if the folder had 3 media files in it, it opened fast. If it had 1000, I was in for a bad time.

I see this issue all the time with VLC, latest version still does it randomly.
It is really annoying when it does that. I can't find the exact cause, it doesn't seem to matter which codec it is using either, this also happens on SSDs as well, but, at least it is much faster than when it happens on HDs.

What I end up doing is using MPC (https://mpc-hc.org/) on those files, and that works just fine with them

Its doesn't seem to be a harddrive idle problem. Theres lots of complaints about vlc being slow to start up and the temporary solutions are all over the place.

MPC-HC doesn't support audio pitch normalization with different playback speeds (chipmunk voices at 2x speed) and some fiddling is needed with reclock. The other 2 players I mentioned in my post above don't have this problem and run without issues in their portable versions.
